Default Finding TDC access hole on bellhousing....

Okay, have a 94 with the bone stock 1.5 SOHC

According to the haynes manual says to find TDC you need to remove an access plate on the bellhousing to view the timing pointer which you align with marks on flywheel/bellhousing....

Anyho, just bought this car and it was not well maintained so very greasy down there.

I cannot find it, but I think it is below the thermostat near the I.D. plate that says "B15........."

Am I close? Any suggestions?

Im not familiar with that procedure. The pointer for tdc though is at the oil pump: you have to take the crank pulley off and the cog. That will leave you with a arrow on the oil pump and another on the crank, align these for tdc. A simpler not as precise way it to remove the spark plugs, and put a long screw driver in cylinder one (closest to cam gear) and rotate the crank (with wrench on crank bolt) until the screw driver will not go any higher or reaches its "top dead center".

The book has you pull the distributer cap and align the rotor up with number one plug wire along with lining up the pointer at this access hole.
You do this by turning the crank pulley with a ratchet.

After you find TDC the manual has you remove the crank pulley...not before.

This has been a lot of work, so I dont want to have to do it over a second time....

Well I've been in the game a while and have built my motor and that how i've set my timing, also i think the oil pump arrow thing is what it says in my service manual.

i know the engines that are usually equipped with balance shafts (ie f22 h22 h23 etc)
have the timing marks labeled on the flywheel.
but not on a d15 single cam....
maybe this helps...

well, I guess in this land of engine swaps nobody knows anything about the stock 1.5's

I looked at the sticky above and found a really good write up with pics on timing belt change.
Problem is, it isnt for a 1.5 SOHC.

1.5 and 1.6 sohc are the same (in the way of setting timing) besides vtec. I've had both, im telling you do it how i said, it works. The only way to look in the bellhousing anyways is to either take the starter off or the shield on the bottom of the motor.

ok, your saying to take off the crank pulley and THEN set the TDC?
Your pretty certain of this?
When I remove the crank pulley I will see the oil pump and mark on the crank nose and align these marks?
Do I then need to check and make sure the rotor is on cyl number 1 ?

Your sure about all this?
I would hate to find out the hard way if your wrong

Take the plugs out, take the pulley off. There will be a arrow on the oil pump casing and a mark the the crank nose/cog pulley for the t-belt. put the bolt (just the bolt) back in the crank and use a ratchet to align those marks. Once aligned its at tdc, simple as that. From there put it all back together and your done, no messing with the distributor or anything.

Okay, got the crank pulley off and the gear behind the crank pulley has a small mark on it ...
Now, supposedly, I need to line this up with a mark on the oil pump casing?
I cant see any marks with which to line this mark up with.

Heck, I cannot even see what is supposed to be the "oil pump casing".

there is a arrow on the oil pump facing toward the crank snout. align the line on the crank gear to the arrow on the oil pump. the cam gear should be at tdc if the timing belt is on and timed correctly.

Okay, found the arrow (actual stamped arrow) which is located just above, well...a lttle to the right and above, the crank snout.
There was some grease there, and couldnt see it before.

So, I put the bolt back in and rotate the crank (does it matter if clockwise or counterclockwise?...no one has mentioned this so far...).

Now, when these line up, do I then go up to the camshaft sprocket (single cam in mine) and look for some marks lined up there? I saw three lines on the sprocket, all about 1/3rd away from each other. I think there is an "UP" stamped in there too.

I really appreciate all the help guys. Perhaps I shouldnt have tackled this myself, but I'm in too far now!

Also, apparently there is a TDC for number 1 on the COMPRESSION stroke and a TDC for number 1 on the EXHAUST stroke.
How do you confirm which is which?
I guess I want TDC on the compression stroke?
Or, for a timing belt change, does it matter?

figured it out.
The cam sprocket has the three lines mentioned above. Also has an UP mark.
The UP mark should be facing straight up and this should correspond with two of the marks lining up with the head gasket (so pointing out to the sides at 90 degree angle to the UP mark. Lastly, the third mark will be facing down and to the left at the little pointer on the plastic inner part of the cover.

So, I got it and will remove the timing belt.

thanks again
