Default Failed NJ emissions help

I went for my test today and revved my car to redline twice on the way
I failed N0x & C0:

N0x 3412/1372 failed
HC 151/ 173 passed
C0 1.14 / .97 failed
C02 12.2
02 1.9

did a little research:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1827227
the reasons for each seems to contradict

knowing i purposely revved is that my problem?
i rememeber reading it needs to be done for a cat temp test
since HC is fine, then my cat is good?

for next time:
oil change
top off collant
drive normally

i have i/h/e and high flow cat (al ebay crap)
and i run 93 octane cause it helps my idle

that should help with my temp and will hopefully fix each reading
can anyone add any more help/info?

What kind of "high-flow cat" do you have? Many of the ones listed on eBay are nothing more than resonated test pipes.

CAT.

Reason why I say this is all your numbers are up. And your O2 that is left over is very high. That is unless you have an exhaust leak.

It is not the motor.

When you replace the cat I would replace the O2 sensor also.

Your numbers should be like this...

Nox under 300
CO very close to 0.0
HC 30 - 90
O2 0.0 or close to it
Co2 Doesn't matter but around 15.0

And run 87 octane... it matters.

anyone know where i can get a real cat with flanges?
how much does anyone think it would cost to get them put on a cat without them?

I don't know much except it's hard to fail a NJ/NY emissions test :-\. You must be OBD-II - OBD-II blows for that reason.

Anyways, only thing I wanted to point out is that you said that you use 93 because it helps your idle.

No it doesn't. You think it helps your idle while on your stock engine it does absolutely nothing than plain 87 octane would do. Also, the car is made for 87/89 octane, look it up on the book.

93 is so cheap it doesnt matter much
i still see mpg and idle argued and i DO notice an idle difference
i would agree "the book" says my car is made for 87

and by the way, my eg is obd1

back to the point of emissions:

Magnaflow direct fit replacement cat: about $69 shipped from http://www.performancepeddler....22636

the only mod you'll have to make is to enlarge the two holes on the spin donut flange so the spring/bolts will pass through. Also the springs are a bit long on the stock ones so I cut off 2 coils and it works good. Also think about getting the 3bolt flange rewelded, mine's leaking a bit because of a bad weld bead.

But usually your local muffler shop can weld in a replacement OBDI cat for like $80 or so dollars.

The shop my me will install a new cat (not just the labor, but part and labor) on OBDI vehicles for about $80. Basically they cut out your stock one and reuse the flanges. I don't know what brand cat they use, but its gotta be a good cat because I dont think exhaust shops can install a non compliant cat, be it OBDI or OBDII.

situation stil lnot resolved due to uncertainty

i think im going to buy the 2.5 obx one from ebay.. about $150
i have a dc 4-2-1 replica header and 2.5 cat back
i believe the cat will fit my piping fine, but will it not fit the header?

if there is a leak ill switch back i guess after testing

someone please tell me if this'll work

My stock replacement cat was $86 bucks and $30 to put it on at a muffler shop.
The cat has 2.5" pipe and mates perfectly with my DC421 header.

High flow cats are designed to just barely get you by. So most of the time you are replacing it for every test.

You are not talking about a hugh amount of performance gain so I stick with a stock one.

Your exhaust leak could be some of your problem as the leak is before the O2 sensor.

im obd1 so i only have one at the header

i dont want it welded because anything else i do (swap/turbo)
will require a shop visit

ima measure the exact size of the piping to figure out if my header is 2.5

Then give up.

1. All that higher octance is going to do is help keep your engine from knocking.
- Is your engine knocking?
2. There's only been a dozen suggestions in this thread already, try a few of those first, run regular gas, and go get tested again.

3. WTF is with the "High flow cat" of fast spooling?
- I bet you have a D-slammer with 87 hp to the wheels. If I'm wrong that statement is completely retracted and resounded apologetically.

i measured my piping and i do have 2.25 header and 2.5 piping
my fake cat is 2.5 both sides though and it fits my header fine

final question: do you think the 2.5 obx ebay cat will fit fine?
i do think that is my cheapest option
