I just picked up a 93 civic EX with the 1.6L - 5 speed in it..from what I see it is mostly if not all stock. I am going from a 88 civic LX. On the 88 civic I was getting around 36mpg consistently with mostly freeway driving.

I was just wondering what people are getting with the 1.6L in a 93 civic. The 93 civic is a much improvement over the 88...this car is in much better shape. But I drive 80 miles round trip to work and I am not sure if I can expect the same 35+mpg from the 1.6L???

probobly depending on driving habits between 31-35 mpg... itll be slightly less than your 88 civic....

i used to get 36 on my 97 hatch D16....

the '93 EX weighs more, and is geared lower than what you had, its not going to get the same mileage. Its still going to be good mileage though.

I think the individual reports ( = reports from actual people) at fueleconomy.gov are helpful. I suspect those getting really good mileage do inflate their tires at least 5 psi higher than what is on the sidewall, use their a/c sparingly, and have driving styles that strive for fuel efficiency. E.g. cruising at 35-60 mph often, which is optimal for fuel mileage generally speaking.

True. If you try a little bit, it's usually easy to get measurably better than rated mileage on most cars.

It should not be difficult to get 35 on any 93 Civic. I was getting 39-41 on a 00 EX with the d16y8 without even messing with the tire pressure.

I am suspecting there is no T-state installed being the car barely comes off the cold mark. I also noticed that there is flow in the radiator when it is first started and cold. Would this have any effects on mpg. My thinking was that the ECU might think the engine is not warmed up yet and run differently. I plan on flushing the coolant system, replacing the t-state and getting some know 50/50 before winter.

Any other things that can be done to get better mpg beside driving habits and tire pressure that has been mentioned??

Definitely change the t-stat, the ecu will run rich because it never warms up. Should help the MPG come up.

Drive like there's an egg between your foot and the gas pedal, and coasting helps fuel mileage quite a bit too, anticipate the lights and slow down early so you never have to come to a full stop.

coasting is good but downshifting is better as it cuts off the fuel and allows the transmission to run the engine. So a long downgrade no gas is used. but if you coasted the engine would idle and use a little gas.
