Default EMISSIONS NIGHTMARE PLEASE HELP!!!

I failed for the 3rd time this morning.. the first time i tested the car was throwing about 4 codes and missed hydrocarbons by about 20.. the second time after fixing the fitv and iacv the car missed hydrocarbons by about 220.. today i went after fixing every code.. so no code. I filled up with 93 oct and used some heet and failed wayyyyy worse then any of the other times.. failed hydrocarbons and co2.. Im sick of this i cant even register my own damn car... car is a 92 dx hatch with a b18b and a gsr transmission... can anyone help me out?

Where state are you in?? You said you fixed all the codes right? After that you should have used a fuel sytem cleaner (auto zone etc) for a couple days, burn out all the old gas, then refill on cheap gas (87, put like $10 bucks or so). I failed twice also, until I did that, then I passed. Hope that helps.

make sure fuel filter is good, spark plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotor, igniter, o2, cat, and try fuel system cleaner too.

But it sounds like ur unable to burn up the gas enough and it's passing right through...u mite want to check ur spark stuff.

Hydrocarbons are basically unburnt gasoline. Putting 93 probably raised your HC level.

What are the limits and what were your actual readings? Was the car warm when they tested it?

Thanks guys it does look like the spark is messed up ... i just bought this car off a local kid for basically dirt cheap last week and havnt realy had a **** load of free time to assess the damage... but what i have found is that the timing on the dizzy is set all the way advanced and if i set it normal the miss at idle goes away but the car stutters alot worse in low rpm and wont go past 5000 rpm.. when i set it back to advanced it revs to redline but stutters if i give it wot at idle till about 2krpm then runs fine but misses at idle.. so looks like there is a timing issue... ok i just checked the timing marks on the cams and crank pulley and they look pretty much dead on, im confused now. And dammit i just filled the car today with 93 octane..32bucks to fill and put some heet from autzone in... the first try was on 88octane i think and almost passed but i figured cleaner burning gas= cleaner emissions so i filled wup with the good stuff today before i went. It looks like he was driving the car this way(limp mode) for about a year so the cat will probably need replacing.. its universal so it should be cheap to replace.. any ideas on my timing situation... i have a pretty t3 sitting in my room that is begging to go on this thing.

advanced timing will cause a lot of NOx. is your air filter clean? a clogged air filter will cause it to run rich. in your case it sounds lie you are running rich. check the filter i am sure thats the problem

Check the basics. Cap, rotors, wires, and plugs.

Also make sure that next time the car is tested, it's after the car is up to temp.

I've had customers fail, then beat the **** out of it on the hwy, and pass with flying colors.

btw: Higher octane gas isn't necessarily cleaner or better. It's just harder to burn.

Always make sure that the car is fully warmed up when you go to test it. The cat- needs to be at the appropriate temperature to function efficiently. What it does is basically burn off all your excess unburned gas that passes through the exhaust.

Make sure that the timing is correct, valve adjustment may also be needed depending on your situation.

If your getting lots of unburned gas the cause could be spark plugs not igniting the mixture properly. Also anything source that causes the car to go rich will contribute to more unburned fuel. Check your sensors.

if test is at idle and not dyno, ive seen alot of cars fail just because of sitting at idle, soon as the car moves it would be perfectly fine, just a thought

yeah postman thats my situation... it sits to low at the moment to be tested the regular way on the dyno.. so they bar test is by sticking the thing in the exhaust pipe.. it passed the high rpm test the first two times but failed the idle.. so i fixed all the problems including the shitty idle it had and it tested worse!! There is no black smoke coming out of the exhaust and i ream it all the way to the emissions place about 15 miles away. i am putting a timing light to it as we speak so i will update.. thanks for all the good info guys its apreciated.

check plugs and gap if you run a higher octane it will help the burh some. your at the point where i would have got a scan tool to read all parameters at once. you could possibly just even have a bead sensor sending a damn no good signal. to the pcm. If your not sure how sensors work and what their signal should be then dont mess with it. i hate emission ***** but know how it works. to be honest your best bet is to have the dealer fix it or a reputable shop with an emissions tech.

ps. start with small stuff like pcv egr o2 vacuum cat air filter injector iat sensor, whichever would apply. the obv. things

I have a degree in this stuff, i know alittle somthing. Ive tested all the sensors, they are all working properly. Timing is right , no vaccum leaks. Going to weld on a new cat tomorrow and hopes it passes emissions, but it still bogs at low rpm and it's driving me crazy that i can't figure it out.

try some of the gauranteed to pass stuff as well as the fuel system cleaner....maybe even try seafoam(my neighbor with a jdm d15b motor used it after failing and passed with flying colors...he also replaced his cat)

I got a new cat put on today, should do the trick the old one was toast... still having the timing issue and i cant figure it out.... car runs alot better with the timing all the way advanced on the dizzy, but will still bog if you give it WOT at idle till about 1500 rpms... when the timing is set normal on the dizy it bogs worse low and bogs up high around 5000rpm too. I took apart the distributor and it looked like it was sparking like it supposed to but there was a decent amount of red residue on the inside of the cap.
