EM1 won't rev past 3500 RPMS (B16A2)
Hello all,
Weird thing happened. Sunday the car ran fine. No problems. Sunday night into Monday mid day it snows like crazy and I skip work. This morning I start the car it's freaking cold outside still, but not cold enough for a car NOT to start. I start the car, it dies right away. I start the car and give it some gas, I notice it sputtered at 3500 rpms, didn't think much of it. It idles fine now. I go inside to eat breakfast. I came back out 10-15 minutes later and spend another 20-30 minutes clearing the snow/ice off the entire car. So the car has been idling for almost 50-60 minutes at this point. I hope in my nice warm car and start to drive away. Cars coolant temp is normal. As I drive down the road I notice the car sputters at 3500 rpms and will not go more. I also notice a CEL at this point (was not on when I first started the car). I pull into a nearby parking lot. I rev the car slowly. REV limits at 3500 rpms. I WOT still limited to 3500 rpm. I pop the hood. Car has no obstruction to air and I can spell a tiny bit of fuel. I use the TB to rev the engine. I can hear the air going into the engine. I also noticed that I was being shocked a little when my hand was on top of the engine. Don't know why that is....
Car is a 1999 Civic Si Mods are a Short ram intake (AEM),Magnecore 8.5mm wires, an ebay cat-back exhaust and Optima Yellow top battery. I added the exhaust and the battery, the other parts were on the car when I bought it.
Anyone know what this would happen. Nothing changed from when it was running perfect to now. It just threw a CEL and stopperd working properly.

I had that same prob with my EG at one time. If I remember right mine was an ECU problem. pull the CEL and see what codes u got and I might be able to help a little more with the situation

I'll see if I can figure someway to pull the codes. But seeing how I am living out a Hotel until I close on my new house in an area I've never lived in before, that might make it a little hard.

Ok, so I go home after work and pick up the civic. Now, not only does the car go above 3500 but it engages VTEC (after proper conditions are met). But the CEL is till on. I swent to Advanced Auto Parts and pulled the code it was a P1607. I cleared it and the car is driving fine for now. I drove home it has to return, but I pocket code reader if it comes up again.
Seems my ECM/ECU may be going out. We'll see. Thanks to all who replied.

was it free to pull the code? if so your welcome for saving you a grip of ripoff money the dealer would have charged. and yeah P1607 Engine Control Module (ECM)/Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Internal Circuit Malfunction looks like your ECU may have a problem. but you can always type that code into the search engine and see what comes up.

Why thank you. For the savings and the search. I went ahead an purchased a pocket scanner, it was only $50, plus my other car has flipped a code. Also I googled P1607 to find out what it was. Seems, since I am living out of a hotel until I close on my hose, I can not afford the time or money to properly resolve this situation. I'm sure as soon as I get settled in, I can take care of the problem and not just the symptoms.
The CEL was on again this morning and the car was in (as you guys put it) "limp mode". I plugged in the pocket scanner and pulled the same code P1607. I cleared it and the car ran fine. I was able to take it to work this morning. I just took it slow....er then usual.
Thank you, nonetheless.

Re: EM1 won't rev past 3500 RPMS (B16A2)
Ok next question. I have some good deals on various ECUs. But as I recall most of or all 1999-2000 Si has a P2T ECU where as a person is selling his P2P ECU for $20.00. He claims it came from and works with the 1999-2000 Si.
My question is: what computers are compatible with my 1999 Civic Si?
**edit** Nevermind, I found that the P2P is for the EX, I assume because the difference in the engine dynamics, it will not work. Still... I found a P2T for $70.
