I personally don't care, but we got shafted for a lot of options.

This is an aftermarket moonroof in a 6th gen ('96-'00) Civic DX hatchback. (This happens to be in a '97 DX hatchback.)
This is an OEM moonroof in a 6th gen ('96-'00) Civic EX coupe. (This happens to be in a '98 EX coupe.)

Well, in the US market at the time the hatchback (as it is seen today too) is mostly seen as a car for peopel who just want to carry a lot. It's seen as being about as cool as station wagons are seen by most Americans.
So the need for a performance model (the EK4) in the US is well, incredibly low.
In the US:
Coupe (2dr) = Sporty
Hatchback (3dr) = Dopey
Sedan (4dr) = Family
Wagon (5dr) = Family/Older Drivers (think "Griswolds")
Not that I believe that, but it's sort of the feeling the general American market has or had towards each body type (of any car - not just Civics).
Think abotu other cars in that body style to try to geta bit better idea. By now many of us might be a bit bias towards the Civic versions. What do you think of when you see an Accent, Focus, Metro or Pinto hatchback?
Sure, you'll always have your guy who sees a Metro and thinks, "You know what I need to do? I need to get that into the 9s." But most peopel will look at him and just say, with a quizzical expression, "Why?"

Re: ek with sunroof?
Yea, that's my old 97 Civic hatchback. I bought the sunroof for ~700 installed. I have since sold the car for 4200 back in 2005. Here's an updated link to the Civic Hatchback Sunroof photos.

You can see the WRX in the back. That's what I sold my hatchback for.

Re: ek with sunroof?
In the UK some of the later 1.4 EK's got electrics. Mine came with wind-down windows and no sun-roof but I got the matador red pearl paintjob :D
Problem over here isn't how many toys you get. I could insure the same EK hatch with electrics for the identical price as my own. The problem here in the UK is insurance.
£1650 for my 1.4 Hatch.... now that's shafted
