EK acting like a *****... cat that is.
I need HT's help on that one.
My G/F's 98 EX, EK (Can Si), is acting up.
Car starts fine, runs fine, no hick ups, no power loss, no CEL. So far so good right... wrong.
When the car is at a steady idle (highway cruising, idling at a stop, or just city driving at a steady pace) I get a weird whistling, almost cat-esque sound coming from the engine bay.
I tried finding the source of that sound, but I can't pin point it. I've got it narrowd down too :
1- Water pump (got plenty of prestone)
2- Alternator (no power shortage though )
3- Power steering (got plenty of fluid and no leaks)
4- Timing belt ??? (just thrown that in there because it needs to be done soon but I never heard a T-B do that before and I owned several EG's and EK's with 300 000+ KM on the clock).
This one is really a head scratcher, I don't want to send it to my mec. and tell him that ''my car is making a noise and I want you to fix it''. I have a ***** after all.
I'll try one of those ''water wetter'' in a can, if the noise subsides then I'll know its the waterpump.
In the mean time, feel free to throw in your 2 cents.
Thanks H-T.

I understand what you mean, and I've heard it before. The sound you talk about is mainly heard close too or at WOT in the lower RPM's (My friends DC2 ITR did this when we removed the intake box).
This is more like a metal on metal sound, like a bearing starting to go or something. Its hard to explain it with words. But its not coming from the intake side of the engine. Its coming from one of the pully's (alt, PS, AC, Cam gear, and finally waterpump).
Thanks for you help anyhoo.

No they don't. Its the intake tube/filter that maks that sound.

It actually happens at a certain throttle position, and not at any specific point in the "power"band. Either way, as you said, I would rule this one out, since you said it does it at idle, and intakes don't do it at idle or anywhere near it.
Other than that, wish I could help. It's hard without being there though. Can't you try and pinpoint it if it happens at idle? Just get out of the car and check under there?

Thats why I specified the acc side of the engine. I can't pin point exclatly where that dang sound is coming from...
Remember, in an EX (Si) there's alot going on in the same cubic foot (ie : AC condenser, powersteering, Cam gear and although a bit lower the water pump).
I just hoped that someone has had that problem before and knew what it was.
I'll keep you's guys updated.

i had that sometimes but it turned out it was my throwout bearing...
is that car stick? and my friends power steering made that noise before and it was the pump bearings starting to go.

Re: (Bazza)
It comes from that area but it's not when I turn the steering and I forgot to mention that when I give a quick blip of throttle, the noise goes away until the idle stabilizes.
I rule out the clutch scenario because I know how it sounds/feel and its not that at all.
Thanks

check the PCV valve. it might need to be replaced. if the valve is bad, there might be too much pressure in the crankcase.
when it makes the noise at idle, pull the vacuum hose off the valve cover (or loosen the oil cap). if the noise stops, its your PCV.
btw, i had this problem, its super annoying, but a quick fix.

Re: (pythoner)
I have actually have the same problem or close to what you have.... It is not on the passenger side, its clearly on the driver side... I have only heard it at partially throttle and before 4500 ( still breaking in the motor )... It sounds like some type of metal jiggling, bouncing, rattling around -- kind of like a bearing .... it is most noticeable when the car is at a low gear climbing though the RPM's.... yet you can hear it through all the gears by the way.
Very annoying... still dont know what the heck it is and have no clue...
Help this guy and ME out!!

Does it also get higher "faster" pitch as you accelerate?

Re: (i.)
Hmmm PCV Valve, I didnt thin about that one... I'll try that one tonight.
I changed my oil and my Antifreeze (winter is coming) and the noise is still there.
All belt are righty-tighty, its not a belt slip kinda noise (althought it sounds like that in my description).
When I check my PCV valve, I'll record the noise (BTW great idea) for you guys.
Thanks for your help.
***Edit***
Also, I really hope its not a distributor bearing... but the more I think about it, the more it make sense. (close to 200 000KM on original dist.)

Re: (Johnny Ricer)
i think its probably one of the acc. pulleys. a bearing in one of those going bad.
get a long screw driver.
hold the handle against your ear.
put the tip on a spot in the bay (power steering pump for example) and listen
that is a DIY, home made, stethoscope

i would do with a pulley or the car having an intake, its very common for intakes to whistle at part throttle with the air moves at the right velocity, ive never really heard it at WOT, i believe the air is whisting because at part throttle the butterfly in the TB is a restriction so the air howls as it goes past it?

No **** you have no idea what it is, that's why you're here.
So why don't you record it.
Record it =/= Knowing what it is. You do not need to know what something is to record it, you actually record it so somebody else can tell you what it is.
****, talking to you is like I'm banging my head against the wall here.
I mean surely you can make a general *** idea of where it's coming from, wheels, engine bay, trunk, whatever. Just record it because your description skills fail. That's not the reason your description is vague, your description is vague because you said your g/f's car is making a "cat-esque" type noise.
That's your description, a "cat-esque" type noise. Record the thing.
Lemme put this in perspective for you.
If you go around asking all the local shops and all the Honda techees that you know that your girlfriend's car is making a "cat-esque" type noise - they're not gonna have the slightest clue what in the expletive you're talking about, and they WILL NOT have any suggestions, and your problem WILL NOT be solved. Record it.
