replacing just gauges or whole clusters? replacing with brand new? or another used one that is prone to failure?

well my very first cluster was a cx cluster but i wanted a tach so i swaped out the whole cluster for a ex cluster and swapped over my old speedo, worked for a good while then the whole cluster just went speedo/fuel, so i bought a new cluster worked then this time speedo went, it was more it would come on and off with no pattern, my vss was good the whole time and i swapped over a working cluster to make sure it wasnt my vss. so jsut wondering why the speedos are so prone to malfucntions

Retighten all the screws behind the gauges.
