EF transmission on a d16y8?
I have a an EF transmission on my engine (y8) and it is making a lot of noise (main shaft bearing?) but doesn't grind or seem to have any other problems. I pulled it out of a car in a wrecker to replace it with another that had the same problems, so its history is dubious at best. Obviously the first thing that came to mind was to get a used y8 tranny for about $300 and slap it on there...but then I have to get a cable -> hydro conversion kit for another $250. I'm not really in a financial situation to drop that much money on a transmission alone.
Are there any issues with putting another 4th gen SI transmission on there like the old one, or is the noise the old one is making caused by some kind of incompatibility? Everything seems to fit perfectly and I have put about 20,000 km on this transmission without any major problems...so I'm thinking it's probably ok as long as I don't put another lemon transmission in there, I just wanted to get some expert advice to make sure everything is gravy.
Cheers!
Alex

Re: EF transmission on a d16y8?
wait i am confused... do you drive an ef, or a eg?
if you drive a eg you shouldn't need to get any conversion kit. but at the same time i have no idea how you would get a cable trans to work on that because the only hydro to cable kits they make are for b-series (not sure if it would work for a d)
if this noise you are describing happens all the time until you press the clutch to the floor then it's the Input Shaft Bearing going back, which unfortunately for us is pretty common especially in d-series transmissions.
maybe you want to look into trying to replace that bearing yourself. there are DIY's on here and from what i have seen it isn't terribly hard you just need to be patient and pay attention to where everything goes.

Re: EF transmission on a d16y8?
I have an EF, which means I have a cable running from my clutch to the trans. I was wondering if mismatching transmissions is an issue, but it doesn't seem to be. I've read the write ups on swapping the bearing and it looks fairly simple having swapped a tranny before...it's just a matter of getting around to it.
