Default ECU Problem? - P28 is only one that works?

I just finished swapping my B16a2 into my friends 96 Civic Hatchback. DX i believe. I had the B16 in my 96 Civic Coupe DX running on a chipped P28. Im not giving him the P28 with the swap. When i finished the swap, i plugged in a JDM ITR ECU and it would not engage VTEC. The same thing with a 98 GSR ECU. As soon as i plugged my P28 back in, to see if it would work, it was fine. Everything was engaging, motor felt much stronger as it had in my car.

My question is, if i get a stock B16 ECU is it going to work as it normally should? The ITR ecu plugged right into his harness, and so did the GSR ECU. For the P28 i had to use my conversion harness.

yea but i think the only one its throwin is the o2 sensor because hes an ******* and welded his headers together so i couldnt swap our headers and i wasnt giving him mine. When i had the B16 in my car i had no CEL. When i first started the swap it had no CEL with the ITR ECU but after running for a couple minutes it came on.

P28s do not have a knock sensor while the other ecus do. The other ecus are looking for it, but the P28 isn't, which allows vtec to work. I would guess that you have either a wiring issue or actual knock sensor issue here. Good luck!

They do, but if the P28 is being used, they will not be looking for a knock sensor, therefore VTEC will work and you will not have a CEL.

ok...so if i put in a stock B16 ECU, it will, or it will not work as it it supposed to? If it has a knock sensor and is looking for a knock sensor, shouldnt it work then? I kept the engine harnesses the same on each motor, i just unplugged from ECU/PCM and pulled it through the firewall...and any other connections i just unplugged from old chassis and plugged into ports on new chassis....thanks for the help guys...

Since you initially had the P28 when you completed the swap, the ecu never needed the knock sensor. You may have had an issue with the knock sensor this whole time, but because the P28 was never looking for it, you never knew.

Also, if that ECU is OBD2 it will require two o2 sensors and the p28 requires only one. Someone correct me if I'm wrong because I haven't worked with either of those ECUs and not sure if my info is right.

The stock B16 ecu will be looking for the knock sensor as well, so if you have a knock sensor issue with your engine, no it will not work. Also the OBD2 ecu will be looking for a 2nd O2 sensor, so if you have elminated that it will throw a code as well. Good luck!

Since you were running the p28, was the knock sensor even on the block? Is it wired and plugged in? They're silly fragile, so you might have broken the senor. If the sensor is there and wired, the B16, GSR or ITR ecu should work fine.

if you have an obd1 ecu you can tune it using chrome or any other obd1 tuning program and then you can eliminate the knock senor check of youd like.

yes the knock sensor coulda taken a ****, but if that itr ecu is obd1 you can still tune it and remove the knock sensor check...ive done it for a p28 chipped to a jdm p30

They never made an OBD1 ITR ecu...you can test the knock sensor using the steps listed in any haynes manual for an acura integra or honda civic model that came with a knock sensor equipped engine. Good luck!
