Icon2 Downforce on my EG Hatch race car

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience running wings on their EG hatch (or an EK for that matter) race car. I am thinking about it, and was wondering the difference it would make, especially when it comes to cornering and handeling. Also, how much did it cost you, and what is the best way to go about it. I don't want anything too ugly. Currently I only have a duckbill wing, which I am guessing does next to nothing?

Thanks!

Your hatch is F/F. The gains from a rear wing are negligible unless you're clearing the kind of speeds that our chassis simply doesn't do. Front wings, on the other hand, have a use.

Okay, what speeds are we talking about. The top speed is about 220km/h (135mph), but obviously only cornering at 160 or so (100mph). I was thinking more in terms of a wing like the pic attached, but would that even have a very small effect?

Could you expand a little more on the front wing, I am guessing it would require a whoe new front bumber/splitter? And I am guessing it would give more front end grip? Better turn in etc?

Also what did you mean when you said my hatch was F/F?

Thanks!

You're asking in the wrong forum. The kids in this forum are more concerned about how to make more power from their small little d series without spending any money.

There's a dedicated road race forum you need to check out. Guys in there actually have experience going fast through turns.

F/F means front engine, front wheel drive.

See the diffusers and splitter on the car you pictured? That's what I'm talking about. As for a rear wing, unless you have access to a wind tunnel and a metric shitload of testing equipment, you can't really know how fast you'll need to go to see a benefit from it. From what I've heard, you have to be talking turns in excess of 140mph+

Okay, well I'll rule out the rear wing then. So how would I go about doing the stuff to the front? And would you have any approximations on costs/difficuilty?

Generic canards are fairly easy to find, you just have to fab them up to fit. A front lower wing generally means either fabricating one yourself, or finding a one-off. They aren't something most companies make.

Okay, and what difference will this make, I'm on a limited budget, and need to make every $$$ count, but in saying that am definitely open to doing it if it will make a difference.

Unless you're driving at both 100% of your, as well as your car's capabilities, little to none.

a rear spoiler is like anti-honda,

they provide down force to the rear of the car, which is sort of works out when your car is rwd or at least awd

Downforce isn't the only reason for a wing

Oh yea, good point. So unless I am producing big enough front downforce (where rear downforce would be used to balance the car) there really isn't any point.

I would be keen to find out a little more on effective ways to produce downforce. One idea I had would be a front splitter, but I don't know how much difference this would make, especially as my car runs quite high.

Rear wings on fwd cars can be used to reduce drag. Honda didn't put one on the ITR for no reason.

If you don't understand this maybe you shouldn't be looking at aero pieces.

He has a hatch though, not an ITR. With how boxed off the rear of a hatch is, you aren't reducing drag any amount worth mentioning.

I didn't realise this. Anyway, I do understand enough about aerodynamics to see the benefits, although I'm still learning...

Thanks for the info.

Not adding any downforce with mentioning either.

Aero is probably the last thing I'd be focusing on unless you are chasing every tenth if a second and big bucks are on the line.

Hell, more like every hundredth of a second. And obviously, adding any downforce to the rear isn't worth mentioning

Okay, point taken - I would probably be wasting my time. What would you suggest instead (you can check out my other post to see details on my car here.
