i have searched and no luck for my answer, but i could have sworn you could replace one of the axles without draining the trans fluid. i just cant remember if its driver side or passenger side. if someone knows please pm me or repost the answer. thank you.

No need to drain the trans fluid. Some will leak out when the axle is removed, but not a large amount. If you're worried about the loss, just top off the trans fluid when done with the axle job.

if you replace your drivers side axle it goes to the mid shaft so you wont be pulling the axle out of the trans. so no worries there... and if you do the passangers side then you still should not worry considering if you have fluid come out of your trans then you are already slightly over filled.... your fluid level should be under the axle openings.

Allot spills out all over the floor. I did it today and forgot to drain it out. I have read many "How to's" and they all say to drain it out as well.

So pretty please , with sugar on top . . . . .. drain the f*cking tran fluid.

up could also just jack up the passenger side of the car so it is at a slant and you wont loose as much. but it is a good time to do a fluid change while you are at it, if you havent done one.

jack the car up on the driver's side so that the trans oil sloshes to one side. Then remove the axle.

trans fluid is brand new, honda mtf. i swapped my wheels from winter set to summer and found out that my driver side boot is torn.. found me a like new axle from the junk yard.

What'd you pay for a used axle from the junk yard? I bought a brand new axle with a damper from O'Reilly for $85.

33 bucks, looks brand new. i can tell you that jacking the car up to one side will work just fine. no loss of fluid at all and at 10 bucks a quart, i dont like spilling honda MTF.

by mid shaft do you mean intermediate? the driver side is the shorter shaft and goes from the spindle into the transmission.. just wondering if you read my OP wrong.. in any case, no biggie.. what else is a mechanic other than a great debator and mr. know it all

Congrats on the inexpensive fix. Yeah, Honda MTF is definitely expensive, so I understand the avoidance at losing any of it during the axle swap. My advice came from my experience that, during replacement of four axles on my 6th generation Civics, I never lost enough fluid to warrant topping off the transmission afterward. This was done with the front end raised and level.
