DIY: How to fix trunk leak 96-00 civic
i've been driving around with a leaky trunk for awhile now and decided to fix it. the first time it leaked i thought it came from the taillight gasket. replace that but it still leaks. so today i took off the rear panel and try to diagnose it. it seems like it was comeing from the left side of the taillight. so i sprayed some water on the left taillight and immediately saw water leaking through from this thing.
the gasket was all torn up.
(this is on my 2000 civic hatch but will apply to all honda)
materials:
sheet of foam 7" x 11" ($0.33 at walmart)
razor
scissor
ruler
red marker
to remove it you'll have to take off the rear panel or move it out of the way. it's locate under the taillight. next, just remove the two clips and remove it from under the car. should be inside your bumper.
once it's out, get a razor or a knife and cut off the gasket. and clean around it.
now grab your ruler and measure around it to get the correct measurement and draw it out on the foam sheet and cut it out. i made three because it was too thin. it was the only one i could find.
carefully slip it over one at a time. i also made a gasket for the two clips.
to insatll it just push the two clips. might need a little muscle because of the thickness.
spray water from the outside and see if there is still any leaks. if not than your good for the rainy season.

It's on the driver side. Remove the carpetting and it's right before the wheel well. I have a trunk leak as well, although mine is right above the arch in the trunk arm when the trunk is open, from a hole that goes up the rear pillar. No idea where it's getting in at.
Good write up though

its leaking through the gasket. there are two, one on each side just below the taillight. you'll have to move your rear panel out of the way to get to it.
