DIY cheap, temporary starter kit
Please note this was a cheap, quick, and temporary solution!! A few years ago i was giving this situation. Problem: when you turn the key, the starter does not crank but if you jumped the starter it would crank. Analysis: bad wiring. The kid asked me to make a way he could start his car (91 civic lx) without getting out and jumping the starter. He only had less than an hour before work and only $10 (all he had for next four days.) So i tested wires from starter to the ignition and the were not fried. At time i couldn't figure out what it was so 1) i took a short spring and attached one end to bolt on engine. 2) Then i took a paper clip and attached it to one post on starter and bent it up and around other end of spring. 3)Then i attached a string to the end of the paper clip and ran it through the firewall to the center console on driver's side. Problem solved for time being. Turn key on, pull string and it would start. It worked fine until he gave me the car and he bought a new one. The actual problem was a starter chip the previous onwer installed fried and did a number on the main power wire (still don't know why it tested okay but it was burnt in half.) I ended up replacing the all of the starter/ignition wires.

congratulations, I see I am not worthy to yield the ghetto mechanic crown. Sounds like some of the stories that I hear about the old mechanics in Cuba! hahaha

ROFLMFAO......frikkin hilarious
I had an 89 chevy nova beater while I was in NY about 5 years ago, that thing was rigged left and right, had no speedo, bald/wobbling tires, no heat or defrost, and the windshield wipers would only go down, so I took an old computer power cord and attached it to the drivers wiper and ran the cable through the drivers window (had to leave it cracked open) to operate, turn the wipers on, pull the cable, and the actuator pulled the wipers back down.......it was hilarious....only one wiper in the middle of winter......not to mention the car would just randomly spin out whenever it wanted....I ended up leaving that hunk a junk on the side of the road and took the plates off, bought an 89 Accord for $500 and drove it home to St. Louis....fun times...
