earlier today i tried to start my car and it didnt start but it started making sounds like it was trying to start. i took out my key and it still made that sound... so i went to open the hood and smoke was coming out of the starter. it didnt stop tryin to start so i took out the negative and positive connections to the battery. when i took it out thats when it stopped. has this ever happened to anyone? is it possible that wires could have been fried? do i just replace the starter to fix the problem or is my whole engine messed up?
Could be the selenoid fried. If that is what went wrong, you can try just replacing that instead of the whole starter. Check pricing, sometimes the cost of the selenoid is nearly the same as the whole starter. Make sure the motor is not stuck by putting a socket on the crank pulley and trying to turn the motor over. If it goes OK, the it is the starter. Check out all the wires to the starter to make sure none are damaged, either by the starter shorting or maybe the cause of it in the first place.
