D17 Motor out of the 7th gen civics?
Does anyone know if the D17 out of an LX and the D17 out of an EX have the same block? Do they have different heads? Is this why they are different. I would ask people on the 2k1 civic site but I dont trust their knowledge. Thanks for your help guys...!

yes...the pistons could be different, but I know for sure that the EX has SOHC VTEC which makes up the 10HP difference between the two
D17A1 = DX, LX
D17A2 = EX
D - Block Type (D-Series)
17 - Displacement (1.7 Liters)
A? - Head Type (A1, A2)
D17A1 = DX, LX
D17A2 = EX

But as you are saying....the blocks are the same then. Thanks alot man! If I were to take an LX head and change the pistons anyway and drop it into my ex.....there shouldnt be any problem right?

um...the pistons are in the block...what are you trying to do exactly?
Ah ha...i found the difference between the pistons...very minimal but here they are anyway:
PLM-A00
01-03 DX
D17A1
total height: 46.50mm
compression height: 27.00mm
2.62mm dish
PLR-A00
01-03 EX/HX
D17A2
total height: 46.50mm
compression height: 27.00mm
2.66mm dish

I plan on picking up a block.....having it sleeved by Benson and Dropping Crower Rods and CP Pistons in it. The problem was......I have an EX which is the "vtec" motor. I have an offer for a block from an LX and I wasnt sure if everything would work out. And if the two blocks are the same.

yep...you're good to go the LX pistons would actually bump the compression up a tad too...but if you're going turbo thats a bad thing

But what if I give Benson the specs on the EX piston for when he does my sleeves? And the specs would go to CP for a custom order because I know they dont make the D17 series yet.

doesnt really matter...sleeves are sleeves...the LX and EX are the same bore...if I were you...just have them sleeve the LX block and use the LX pistons and bolt the EX head onto it

But it would raise the compression? My reason for building the block it to turbo it down the road once I gain my money back. And to my understanding.....lower compression is better for turbo. And you just said it would be a bad thing. But I was just looking at the numbers and diff between the two pistons and dont see to much diff?

Are these GX pistons? I always wondered what compression it would yield in a D16, anyone know?

GX are very different and depending on d16 could be from 12-13 roughly. Personally im not totally sure what compression the ex on lx block and pistons would yield but street cars with the right tuning benefit greatly from compression on a small turbo. Quicker spooling and more power on less boost. However it depends on your horsepower goals. Goodluck.
