D16Z6 > B16A1 Swap (is it worth it?)
Hey guys, first post here. Mainly I've been a toyota guy for a long time.
Anyways, here's the situation...
For two years now, my girlfriend and I have been using her 95 EX for autox. We've been running in the STS classes locally and some out of town events like Portland, and Atwater CA.
Anyways, last weekend we did a Prosolo event. As the event went on, the car began to smoke alot! Initally it was just a little in the higher RPM's, but now any hard shift or rpm's above 3K and the poor D16 looks like a chimney. The engine does have close to 200K on it, though I've been good about changing the oil on a very agressive schedule when we're beating on it. I think that the engine is done now though.
OH forgot to add - I pulled the plugs and ran through the current engine in the car. Cyl 3 is pretty much fubar. Lots of carbon buildup, etc...
We're going to move the car back to being a daily driver and ramp up a Miata for STS2.
Anyways, for a daily driver, would a B16A be a decent swap? My girlfriend doesn't need gobs of power, though she liked where we're at with the current setup (118hp/101 ftlbs at the wheels). I like the idea of the B16 for the DOHC design and the similarity to the current engine. I think my girlfriend would enjoy a little more passing power on the freeway though, hence the reason I don't want to drop in another D16.
Does anyone have personal experience with a swap from a D16z6 to a B16A1? How difficult? What pitfalls are there ? Was there anything special required? If possible I'd like to use the current tranny in there because of it being just recently rebuilt. I also would like to continue using the P28 ECU because I've got hondata setup on it, and love the ability to tinker with it
I know this seems like noob questions, and I've been reading through other posts and such, but I wanted to hear some peoples personal experiences.
Thanks
Drew

yea i would put a b16 in there... no you cant use the d series tranny... you need the b all of the mounts work.... except for you need the b sereis back bracket and the tranny tourqe mount.. and upper and lower radiator hoses... i am not shure of what mounts or hoses for what motor you need.. also you need a b series shift linkage..
yes the p28 will work fine with the b series

the hp difference between those 2 engines isnt a whole lot... and the torque difference is nothing... b16's are torqueless engines
personally.. id just find another d16z6 longblock and do a drop in.. wont need anything but the d16z6.. and u could find an engine for a couple hundred no problem.. and passing power on the highway? well 3rd gear is your friend.. maybe 4th depending on how fast your going...
the difference in power between the 2 motors isnt enough to bother for a daily driving car... go the cheap route man.. u dont need a b16 for your application

have you exercised the thought of a B18b or LS engine *for those who don't know*.....For the price of an LS engine i'd rather have that then a B16 anyday...just my .02...Good luck...ethier swap is fun

Well, I had considered just dropping in another D16, but I want to find one that's got fairly low milage. My girlfiend will be doing a daily drive of about 70miles each way this summer. I'd rather she have a reliable ride.
The reason I was thinkin a B16, is there seem to be some later model ones around, so my hope is I can find a lower milage one.
I haven't looked into the LS engines yet (sorry still a honda noob). I'm guessing that's a Integ engine? What year/model should I be looking for?

Well, even if it's just a BHG, with almost 200K on the engine, it seems like it'd be worth more to find a different engine, maybe fresh it up a little and go with that.

if you want a low mileage z6 consider a ZC vtec, it's the same engine, just swap the fuel rail, and since it's JDM they're always claimed to have 30-60K miles.
I think the b18 (LS) will be better than the b16. Look for an obd1 block, 94-95??? the 92-93 is also obd1, but the tranny is a cable cluth.

Re: (PSmurf78)
It's all going to come down to the money and/or preference of engines. I'm not going to to start a LS or b16 argument. It's your choice on which engine you want. The LS will have more torque from stop light to stop light and the b16a will just fly on the freeway. Were talking both engines in stock form. If you like vtec then go with the b16. If you don't care for vtec then go with the LS. The b16 and the d16 with stay together in a race until vtec kicks in the b16 then it will pull away. (torqueless wonder, but rev happy). You make the decision.

still not sure about the laws for engine swaps and what not, but you should look into what laws occur to you in your area, you may only be able to put a 95 plus motor into your car......if you want it to be street legal

Re: D16Z6 > B16A1 Swap (SPNFEDEJ)
its not about sohc or dohc its about a b series motor vs a d series motor, so no the tranny will not bolt up. If you are looking for a reliable daily driver then stay with a d series motor because you already admitted you dont need the power and it will have a better gas mileage. if you really want a daily driver a d series is where you want to go but if you want any perfomance at all.......... go with the b16...... unless you are boosting that d series. call japan direct to get either of those j-spec motors with less than 35K miles on them..... 1-888-518-7341

Re: D16Z6 > B16A1 Swap (B18CR_EG)
I dont understand how someone could consider a D16Z6 equal to a B16A unless they never went above 3000 rpms on either motor. They're both 1.6 L so until the upper RPMs no, its not gonna make much difference, but if you're beating on it like you say, its gonna be a HUGE upgrade and well worth it.
