d16y8 transmission help
Hello, yesterday when I was taking the case off of my d16y8 manual transmission a couple little ball bearings came out when I pulled it off. I've rebuilt three Honda transmissions and never had these little ball bearings come out before. Im not sure where they go or where they came from. Any help is appreciated! Sorry for the hugeness in the picture its from my iphone.

Are they the bearings that are supposed to sit behind the springs where the shift forks meet the case? Thats what im thinking.

Re: d16y8 transmission help
yea, there are 2 bolts on the side of the trans, with springs that sit in them, the ***** go between the spring and shift fork and hold the gear into place. those ***** are what you feel when it "pops" into gear and holds it there.

These holes? only the 3 holes have springs for the shift forks. The reverse gear does not have a spring or bearing correct?

the 2 bolts that you should have removed, from the outside of the case, they are actually on the bottom of the case when it's sitting like it would in the car.once the trans is all bolted back together, the ***** go into those 2 holes, that the bolt with the spring.

Re: d16y8 transmission help
in this image, #23 is the ball followed by 9, 18, 10.
They must be installed AFTER the trans is bolted back together.
How could you have re-built them before and not known this?

Re: d16y8 transmission help
Is this the d16y8 illustration.?
If it is in reality so this is really helpful and would most make a good suggestion to this to have this in. This illustration tells the all things that where we have to put the ball barring and how to fix it completely.

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. I've never done a y8 trans before. Thanks for the responses guys. Much appreciated!

Re: d16y8 transmission help
every d and b series manual trans has these *****. and yes, that is from a y8 trans, but all d series trans will be the same as that image, as long as its manual and hydraulic.

Re: d16y8 transmission help
Not exactly. Older D-series transmissions ('88 - '95) don't have external detent bolts. The ***** are in the aluminum shift fork itself and normally you don't need to remove the forks from the rods so you never see the *****. Early cable B-series trannys are the same way.

Ive done a 94 s20 trans, a 94 s40 trans and a 91 b18 trans and none of these had these external ball bearings.

Re: d16y8 transmission help
Just as an aside all '92 - '95 D-series trans are S20, and all '96 - '00 are S40. The A000 and B000 stamps designate small (35mm) and big (40mm) bearing respectively.

ohhhh nooooooo, I redid one for my brother that was stamped s40 but didnt have ball bearings fall out when I pulled the case. If there was none in there wouldn't there be shifting problems?

Re: d16y8 transmission help
Make sure you use new crush washers under the detent bolts when you install them, if you forget the washers you'll drive the ball into the bolt and ruin it, if you use old washers you'll have shifting problems sometimes. Do not overtighten.
