Default D16Y8 OBDII Cold Idle Problems

Recently my 2000 Civic EX has been idling at about 2 grand and fluctuating at startup. Searching on the forum has shown the problem to most likely be the IACV or the FITV. Does the D16Y8 have a FITV or does the IACV control cold idle on OBDII?

I had the same problem a while ago and the Honda dealership told me it was some type of sensor near the Vtec solinoid is but im not 100% exactly, they fixed it for me. Do you have a one of those Hanes Manuals, if so look it up. Ill look it up tonight to see it does

i dealt with this tricky idle **** for about a month after i swapped my rebuilt motor back in. no CEL but surging idle. cold idle is the FITV. after it warms up, the FITV closes and the IACV takes over from there. my idle was surging tho between 1500 and 800. up down up down. all i ended up doing was taking the FITV off and adjusting the plunger thing in there. it worked for me. too bad it only took me a month to figure it out after checking for vacuum leaks many times, bleeding coolant about 10 times, and totally draining the coolant and refilling and bleeding again.

oh yea, its not a sensor that needs to be fixed unless you have a CEL. those are the easy fixes. i believe theres only 2 sensors related to idle. theres a coolant temp sensor and the IACV sensor. however, if there isnt a CEL for a sensor, it could be:
vacuum leak
IACV could use a cleaning
FITV needs adjusting or replaced
bubble in the coolant
etc etc.

People need to quit it with the guessing ****....there is no FITV on the D16Y8.

Do you have an auto or 5 speed Y8?

My stock 99 hatch, D16Y7, uses a 3-wire IACV (and so do auto Y8's, which is why I asked). At around the 175k mile mark, the IACV froze up on me. I would start the car and it had a higher idle than normal; once warm the surging idle was present as was the off-decel buck. I went ahead and shot a can of throttle body cleaner through the IACV port....it seemed to do the trick. So give this a shot first.

im not guessing...its called troubleshooting. i had a 5th gen and didnt know that a d16y8 doesnt have a FITV. as far as i knew, the d16z6 and y8 arent that much different. if you read, i said thats what i did and fixed mine. i also gave him all the other stuff he needed to check to rule it out. and your fix was also listed in my post as well. "IACV could use a cleaning" to u

Well, now you know different and won't be so quick to make a suggestion that has FITV and Y8 (Y5 and Y7 included) in the same sentence.

The fact that his search turned up the possibility that the Y8 has a FITV is in error...and guess what, you only added to his confusion with your troubleshooting tips. Your other information is correct however, which is why I didn't bother posting about it.

In any event, to the poster: What mods/maintenance have you done recently? Did this just start out of the blue?

Default Thanks

I appreciate the comments all! I didn't think it had a FITV but wasn't sure as I didn't see one in the standard location for this. I have a 5 speed. No recent mods done to the car. It just started acting up about 400 miles ago. I am leaning to the IACV needing a cleaning and maybe resetting the ECU. Will try that out this weekend and let you guys know.

On a side note, I didn't even say Hi as that was my first post here so "Hi all!"

I have an intake/exhaust on the car that was installed when my little bro owned it but haven't done any other mods to it yet. My original plan was to sell the car after a month and pickup another Eclipse or Camaro but I kinda like this slow POS! (Sarcasm, this is the cars first problem ever in 77,000 miles but it is slow!).

My other toy is an 85 Dodge Omni GLH-T converted to a TII running 15lbs of boost. I hope to make the Civic perform down the road but it takes cash!

Again thanks for the help and I'll let you know if the cleaning does the trick.
