D16 non-VTEC to D16 VTEC, Need new Trany What Trans is Best
So here is a little background:
*note* Only know a little bit about Honda's as i have been in the USMC for the last 4 years and the car is at home. Going back soon and will need to fix it... Again...
I bought a 1992 Civic Si Hatchback back in 2004 from a buddy. He thought that Redlining everywhere and holding it while having 4 Passengers was the way to go. So the motor went Boom he kicked the Drivers 1/4 pannel in and sold it to me for $100.
I found a motor from a 1995 coupe for $550, did some body work, $36 Flat Black pint job and she was back on the road
Drove it for 2 years at college then Joining the military and it sat. Dad drove a few times and the Transmission went out on him, no fault of his, I know it was me.
Okay so if your still reading here is the Problem:
1st:
What is the deal with the VTEC now?
Is it working with this set up or is it not?
What would need to be done to correct this?
Am I doing damage how it is set up now?
2nd:
The Trans is blown! What are my options for that?
I was told by someone out here that I could go with a B series Trans and that would be better. I don't know. Yes, I tried doing searches on here but nothing to really answer my questions.
Oh and I think the power steering pump is locked up too but thats no big deal.
Please Don't get OFF TOPIC and stay civil with one another if you don't agree on a better trans for my set up.
I know most people do better with pics so here you go!
Here's the car as I got it.

You have to do some wiring for the vtec to even kick in. Not having it hooked up wont hurt anything, though. How much do you know about the vtec system and how it works?
Oh, you cant put a b series tranny on a d series motor, if you didnt already know.

Did you run a wire for your vtec solenoid to your ecm? how about your knock sensor?
Your ecm needs these 2 inputs to engage vtec.
I may be wrong, but i think you also need a vtec ecm. I am going to assume you have a P06 in there, try to find a P28.

not to burst your bubble but your old motor was vtec too. Look on the backside of the valve cover. Yes 92-95 ex/si or 96-00 ex trans will be the best trans.

Yeah I thought it should have been since it was an Si. Why would the valve cover not say it though. What am I looking for on the back side of the valve cover?

I would go for an EX tranny since it hace a nicer 5 th gear. No one races in fifth anyway, The Si tranny is more expensive and the EX tranny is a good solid one. All D series trannies mate with D series engines. Look for a good one online in the local Craigslist ads and the ones no too far away.
Si tranny is nice but who wants to ride anywhere in a car going 4,500 rpm's going 80?
The EX will suit you fine.
The ID of the transmissions is not that straightforward to decipher. There is no hard and fast (high speed low drag) method. There is however some info that is straight up and somewhat constant on the D series transmissions. There are two basic cases - DX and LX is one and the EX and Si are the other.
The housing of the transmission has a small circle that has a P20 over a B000 this represents the latter of the two and is what I am recommending. It is either an EX or and Si. The sticker doesn't mean ****. The only real way to find out which one you get is to see it in the car it came from or to trust what the seller is telling you. OW it is a guess.
The other thing to add here, the matter of whether it is an LSD tranny or not. If you look at the tranny on the side where the axles go in. If the is nothing there and you could see through without any obstructions, it is an LSD it there is some sort of shaft or pin or something in the center, it is NOT LSD.
LSD is fun, not necessary, but fun. A real LSD costs a great deal of money, an OBX brand is a copy and you can get one for about 350 on eBay. They are good copies of the quaife.
Go in Peace and TUNE.
