d16 vtec to d16 non vtec swap questions?
quick question for you guys my friends blew his motor on his 92 civic. it had a d16 vtec motor from a 01 civic i think. we need to swap it out asap and its his beater car so as cheap as possible not caring about performance either. he found a d16 non vtec motor from a 98 civic i think locally what would have to be changed out besides the motor. would he need to change harness and ecu or will they work. and about how long does this type of swap take?
thanks

Re: d16 vtec to d16 non vtec swap questions? (hotcivicsi)
if he had a sohc vtec from a 01 it would one, have extra plugs on the harness for the individual coil packs, and two, be obd2b instead of the obd2a that everyone is used to. now im going to assume your friends motor is a 96-00 sohc vtec. since 01- and up the base motor was a 1.7 except the 1.3hybrid. you could still use the same harness since they are both obd2a and you could still run the same ecu. and you will also have a few extra plugs for the vtec solenoid and oil pressure sensor for vtec. other than that everything else is interchangable, (axles, mounts, accesories.. etc. ) hope that helps.
edit**.. as for how long it will take, that all depends on how good you are with cars. when i do my swaps i usually have a buddy with to do all the stuff on top and im underneith taking the axles, shift linkage and rear mount off. so assuming you have some knowledge of what your doing. a few hours tops. pulling honda motors isn't exactly rocket science.

I'm thinking its a 00 motor then since you mentioned 1.7 on the 01 and up. ya that helps we just weren't sure if were gonna need to swap the whole harness.
