My motor has been consistantly making a strange noise lately. It happens when the revs hit between 3000-3500rpm. Its a scratchy, grindy, rattling noise that seems to come from the lower right side of the engine bay (driver's side). It happens no matter if I'm in gear or not. It only makes the noise from 3000-4000rpm. Anyone know what it could be?

By the way its a 98 civic hatch DX.

Most likely a heat shield or random parts that are loose just rattling.

I have a 98 dx hatch and had a similar noise before.... it was the main shaft bearing in the transmission.... and that was about the rpm it did it at too.... and I stress main shaft bearing and not the throwout bearing

replaced the mainshaft bearing in the transmission

Mine did that when I first instaled my exhaust. It was rattling against the heat shield. Check for loose vibrating parts, if it was your main shaft, then the noise would be coming from the trans side of the engine.

i agree, (not saying it cant be the bearing either) i also had an ef8 and the person who owned it before me must have droped a bolt or 2, plus a rock in between the heat shield and the outer heat shield was loose, bad rattle at 3-4k rpms and it drove me nuts so i took them off = no noice, id jack it up and take ALL the heat shields off the exhaust manifold.. outer and inner and see if thats it, even if u dont see anything doesnt mean nothings there, its too easy for a rock to pop up in the under part where u cant look or a bolt to fall and bounce in there

No, it's the driver's side. I've checked my heat shields before but I'll have to check again. I tried to see if i could crange the frequency of the noise by getting someone to press on the heat shields while I held the revs at the point where it made the noise. Could it have to do with the alternator or water-pump?

its usualy the heat shield, maybe try to have somebody rev up the car while you have it jacked up,

ive had the problem a few times, annoying as **** especialy like in parking lots when you cruze by some skanky 10 year olds and your exhuast rattles
