coolant temp sensor
Is this the one next to the thermostat on the housing, with the flat end, or is it the one below the distributor that is skinnier with a flat point?
THe reason i ask is because i replaced the thermostat and the sensor on the housing, yet im still throwing a code 6, which is coolant temp sensor.

The one on the housing is the fan switch.

There are 2 sensors under the dizzy for temps, one goes to the gauge cluster the other to the ECU, the ECU one is the one furthest towards the front of the car, should be the larger of the 2.

alright well i replaced the sensor that goes to the ecu, but im wondering if that is causing my engine to overheat and then throw codes? because i have a slightly melted coolant reservoir where the cap goes on, and when my CEL is on it starts spraying coolant out.
Is the CEL causing the spewing coolant or is the spewing coolant causing the CEL?

Neither.
Whatever caused the vehicle to overheat is most likely what is throwing the cel.
Did you have this problem before you replaced the thermostat?
Check your water pump. There is a small hole on it called a weep hole. It is there to let you know when the pump goes bad. If there is any coolant coming from the hole the pump is bad.
Also check to see if your fans are operating. I don't think it would have caused this but you really never know any more. Today at work I was working on the AC on a Lincoln LS that is two weeks old and the car has been in the shop for 10 days. We replaced the H block because it was clogged. And then we did not know what to do next because every thing else seemed fine yet the temperature of the air from the vents was still only 55 degrees. We ended up overcharging the system on purpose to see if the compressor was bad. Well ended up that we replaced the compressor and the seal on the low side was torn and much of it was missing. It was all sucked into the AC system. So guess what I get to do tomorrow? Rip everything out that is in front of the front seats and behind the motor to replace another H block because it is most definitely clogged again.

Blown head gasket maybe?

And what's your temp gauge doing when this is going on?

Re: (Chiovnidca)
I dont think its my head gasket as im not burning oil or leaking oil.,
The fans work, they come on.
my temperature guage is of course overheating when the car is spewing coolant.

the sensor is on the left corner of the head, below the dizzy, has two wires.. If you dont replace it your car will have a hard time starting when it gets hot.. I replaced mine over a year ago.. about 30.00 at NAPA. I also was throwing that code.

Son of a bitch!! SO it's not the small one with the single wire that throws the #6 code?

Yep red one. Also this doesn't show the fan switch on the thermostat housing on obd1 and up motors. That also controls the fan.
But the red one is the ECT 2 or B sensor which on this setup controls the fan as well.
And I think the blue one is ECT 1 or A but not exactly sure what that does. It has been about 1 year since I have had to troubleshoot that problem.
