Computer not reading correct speed interval

Computer not reading correct speed interval
My CEL was on so I reset it by un plugging the negative wire to the battery.
I went to get it smogged but the tech told me that the speed interval is off
and recommended me to drive it 70 miles then come back.
I did drive it 70 miles but still its off. Then he told me to drive it in normal
speed condition by street driving and not highway speed. Is this the right
way to get the speed interval to read properly?
