Default Cold start hesitation and low RPM's.

Since it's been colder outside my car has been having some difficulties starting up. When it does fire up though, the rpm's stay very low (around 1000) and only go up to normal, around 1500 rpm, after about 30-45 secs. Is this normal or can something be done.

The motor is a 99 gsr with a obd-1 p72 ecu.

clean the FITV (fast idle thermo valve) see if it helps

It raises the engine speed (RPM) when it's cold so it can warm up faster (as running cold is bad for the engine). If it's jammed up and not working properly it could be hesitating to speed the RPM up. Hense the slow idle at first, then speeding up and working like it's supposed to when it unjams.

I guess i had the inner working of it confused...If the valve inside isnt screwed tight it idles high but when its snug it idles normal, and this is on a spring right? how would it jam?

Crap gets in there, clogs it up, hence the process of "cleaning it."

Where is the FITV throttle valve located on the engine?

I'm using 5-30 motor oil.

Still doing it...a little more about my motor. 1999 GSR, edelbrock throttle body, skunk2 intake manifold, stock cams, low comp pistons, n/a for the winter, forged internals...

From what I hear, forged internals hate the cold. The metal takes longer to expand and can create a little piston slap at cold startup. Could the pistons and rings just not be sealing against the cylinder walls for those first few seconds? I noticed that if I tap the gas right at startup the engine seems to hickup a little. Trying to move the car with the stage 2 clutch is very tricky unless the engine is warmed up.
