Code 48 - Lean Air Fuel Sensor on '92 Honda Civic VX
Hi,
I have a 92 Honda Civic VX which started flashing code 48 yesterday. I looked this up on the net and found out it is a lean air fuel sensor located somewhere in the exhaust system. Could anyone tell me whether this is a serious problem and what exactly the problem is?
Thanks,

I have the same code. It's the O2 sensor. I've been driving with the code for quite a while and it doesn't affect performance but my fuel economy is down 10% or so. I don't know for sure that it's the sensor, but it's plausible that with a bad sensor the ecu runs rich to be safe.
Anyone have a source for the 5-wire O2? Cheapest I could find was almost $300. (oxygensensors.com).

don't get the autozone one. they say its 5 wire but its not. a 5wire o2 sensor will be 200+ dollars. wideband o2 sensors don't come cheap.
i do have a working NTK 5wire o2(factory honda) still from when I put a bseries in my VX hatch. I bought it brand new last year($250) and used it for one year then finally went b-series. It's in my garage somewhere, if someone wants to purchase it let me know. i accept paypal, or u can send a money order.
100 shipped in continental U.S.
vouch thread is in my sig

Re: O2 sensor at Autozone.com
The cheap O2 sensor is the Bosch LSU, which I understand is NOT interchangable with the Honda OEM part, NTK L1H1.
According to http://wbo2.com/lsu/sensors.htm, the NTK L1H1 is also sold as the Bosch 13246.
If you enter Bosch 13246 in autozone.com, it says it's only $85, which I suspect is a mistake because it's way less than any other site I've seen. Maybe I should just buy it and see; I can always return it.

I woudl buy it in a heartbeat man. Just because they used to be expensive doesn't mean they are anymore.
When I raced mustangs, I dropped 94 each for heated o2 sensors and now they are less than 40 each.

I ordered the Autozone sensor. Fingers crossed it's the right part.
Google returns lots of people on various forums who bought it from Autozone for double that...
I was about to drop $300 on the official Honda version. Here's hoping...

Re: O2 sensor at Autozone.com
UPDATE: Good news and bad news.
The good news is that it seems to be the right sensor. It's a Bosch box, number 13246, but the sensor is stamped NTK just like the OEM part. It has 5 wires and a sticker on it that says Honda 36531-P07-003, which is the right number. Going to install now...
The bad news is that it WAS a mistake, and if you go to Autozone.com now it's listed at $298.99! (It's $339.56 at hondaautomotiveparts.com) So it's too late now to take advantage of Autozone's error. I saved $200...better to be lucky than good!
