GSR harness is useless on a 96-up civic...unless you want to reroute your entire underdash wiring too.

Well, the 96-00 Civic harness differs greatly from a gsr harness.
But, the 92-95 Ex/Si is very similar. If you are using this in a GSR/92-95 Hybrid, you will want to use the harness, especially if you are running an OBD 1 motor/injectors/distributor.

If you're putting an OBD-I GSR engine in a 92-95 Civic, you most certiainly DO want to use the GSR harness. It plugs right up to the stock connectors, and if you have a 1992, all you have to do is add ONE WIRE to the harness to make it work PERFECTLY.
If you use an 92-95 EX/SI harness on a GSR motor, you will lose secondary runner control, AND knock sensor. Not a good idea.

That's exactly what I'm saying.
I guess I worded it so that it sounded like I was saying to use the ex/si harness rather than the gsr harness.

But that would be perfectly fine if you were running a Skunk2 IM and a P28 ECU.
I have a question tho... is that harness a good idea if the motor were OBD-2 rather than OBD-1, going in a 92-92 hatch?

well, if the motor is OBD2, you want to use an OBD2 harness.
Only reason is the injectors and the distributor. The plugs are different. Plus there is a knock sensor, and a crank fluxuation sensor on an OBD2 motor...something OBD1 doesn't have.
You can use an OBD1 harness on an OBD2 motor, but it you have rewire and stuff. S
Seems like it'd be easier to use a harness that matches the OBD of the motor/injectors/harness.

The rechipped ECU's have no knock sensor control. Although I haven't ever noticed my car knock, if it did, I'd like the ECU to be able to detect it.

Re: are civic ex/si wiring harness same as obd1 gsr? (shawnhayes)
sorry to bring back from the dead but i'd rather post here than start a new thread
i have a 93 civic hatch si(si's come with the vtec motor so i dont need to wire vtec) i am buying a 94 gsr motor but it does not have a engine harness
should i use my harness or sell mine and get a obd1 gsr harness, i will be using a skunk2 manifold, and a skunk2 chipped p28
what modifications will i have to do should i keep my stock si injectors and distributor plugs?????
what would be the easiest thing to do?? i dont care about spending money i need the motor to be perfect
thanks

u can use your harness. u dont need the extra plugs for the butterfly valve cuz u will be using the skunk2 manifold, and since u will be using a p28 u dont need the knock sensor wired up either. also, since the motor is a 94, the distributor and injectors on that motor will plug rigt into your harness

^this is correct^, only thing you will have to do is move the O2 sensor wiring, at least I did when I put my b16 in my 94ex..
on the ex the O2 sensor was on the header primaries, on the b16 the O2 is located near the cat. I assume the gsr is the same.
you can do this with out cutting wires if you are careful, just seperate the O2 wires from the rest of the harness enough to give you slack to reach the new location of the O2 sensor
hope this helps....gl

u can still use your harness but u wont have the butterflys wired...my friend did this with a jdm gsr and everythign was ok like that, and he eventually went to a skunk2 mani anyway

Re: (JDM96SpecCTR)
if i dont have the butterflies wired will that be a problem (check engine light??)
how long can i run like this because i wont get the skunk2 manifold for another month or two,
also i know you guys are saying that i CAN use my harness but my wuestion is SHOULD i use my harness, i dont want to cut corners so if the car will run better with a gsr harness i'll buy a gsr harness know what i'm saying, but if it will run the same with my harness than whatever i can save that extra money
thanks for all of the replies you guyd have been great help

hmm im not sure if u will get a check engine light...but anyway if money is no object get the gst harness. but i would just use the ex harness adn stick it out til u get the skunk2. even if u do get teh cel for it, its probly not gonna change much and its not like ur car will be hurt from it

Re: (JDM96SpecCTR)
well i figured i'll wait till i can afford the skunk2 manifold before i put it in since the motor is out of the car, so as a last question, will i get a cel with the skunk2 manifold and my 94 sohc si harness and a chipped p28???

bingo, but for the most part a civic ex/si harness will work.
