Default Civic with B16- weird problems

Alright i have a 93 civic with first gen b16, and itr tranny. About the month ago the car started somewhat puttering when i was at idol, then gave full throttle, it would just bog until it hit 2k then it would shoot right up. A week later it got bad, and it just puttered, and would barely accelerate, the exhaust sounded totally different too. So i replaced the plugs, that fixed everything.... Then a day later it did it again, but now its gotten bad, it will hardly accelerate, it sounds like a wrx, and when vtec kicks in its just backfiring. The weird part is at certain miscellenous points it runs and sounds fine, but then others its not. I dont think its timing due to that, and i have a feeling its a dizzy. Just thought id see what anyone thought on here, thanks!

like ekb16 said it could be cat. but if it was the cat it would do that all the time, not most of the time and then run fine other times. i would go through your wiring and make sure there isn't a loose connection. thats kinda what it sounds like since it will run ok sometimes. just thought i'd give you my 2 cents. hope it helps.

What did the plugs look like when you pulled them? Can you do a compression test?

I'm thinking you may have dropped a cylinder due to a fouled plug. When you replaced the plugs it was OK, but you may have fouled another one. A compression test will tell you if you dropped a cylinder or not. Does you car smoke at all?

It may very well be in the distributor, but they are kind of expensive to fix and some times hard to diagnose, where as a compression tester is like $15-20. I think this is the best way to help eliminate any mechanical issues.

We can't help you if you can't give us some more info or are willing to try some things.

Do a compression test and report back.

side note- I had a 2nd gen B16A with an ebay 99si distributor. I had nothing with problems with that thing until one day I completely dismantled the distributor and reassembled it. Everything was fine after that and I have no clue what I did to fix it.
