that it... you have spark... it shouldn't spark constantly... only sparks when the distributor sends the rotor around to the contact

to break it down a lil bit for u..
the distributor has a lil rotor on it, basically a piece with a conductor on the end that spins. the cap has four pins on it where the rotor comes into contact to. the rotor spins from the cams, its all done by gears. when the motor is running its spinning the cam and spinning the rotor, contacting each one of the 4 pins on the distributor. now each pin is connected to a spark plug wire. of course the wire is connected to the spark plug. so when the motor is cranking / running, your going to get intermittent sparks, because it goes 1-2-3-4. so when all 4 have sparked it starts over, yet it goes so fast it takes not even a second for it to complete all four.
