Chois i VTEC (2:31:28 AM): http://www.mmrusa.com/jump.mpg
Mr (2:31:35 AM): thers a lot more impact
Mr (2:31:36 AM): on the freeway
Mr (2:31:39 AM): when rocks are hitting your car
Chois i VTEC (2:31:47 AM): i dont think so
Mr (2:31:55 AM): lets say you're going 90 mph
Mr (2:31:57 AM): behind a big rig
Mr (2:32:04 AM): all of a sudden, the rig spews rocks towards u
Chois i VTEC (2:32:21 AM): you know automotive paints are hella delicated
Mr (2:32:21 AM): lets say the rock moves 50 mph
Mr (2:32:23 AM): and you're moving 90 towards it
Chois i VTEC (2:32:29 AM): so hgow come paint doesnt get chiupped
Mr (2:32:29 AM): its kinda liek you're standing still
Mr (2:32:35 AM): and you're throwing rock at yourself at 140 mph
Mr (2:32:39 AM): uh paint does get chipped
Chois i VTEC (2:32:45 AM): why
Chois i VTEC (2:32:47 AM): its soft
Mr (2:32:52 AM): how do i kno?
Mr (2:33:07 AM): throw a small piece of rock
Mr (2:33:07 AM): at your car
Chois i VTEC (2:33:11 AM): you do it
Mr (2:33:11 AM): and see if it'll get chipped/dented
Mr (2:33:14 AM): or scrathed
Chois i VTEC (2:33:16 AM): y6ou do it
Chois i VTEC (2:33:21 AM): throw it at 60mph
Mr (2:33:24 AM): no, cuz i kno it will
Chois i VTEC (2:33:37 AM): carbon fiber is flexible
Chois i VTEC (2:33:44 AM): metal is too
Chois i VTEC (2:33:55 AM): but metal keeps the shape of whatever it got hit with
Chois i VTEC (2:34:01 AM): like someone rolling on it
Chois i VTEC (2:34:10 AM): when it bends it'll stay like that
Mr (2:34:19 AM): i suppose
Chois i VTEC (2:34:53 AM): i dont see how carbon fiber hood will dent like you're trying to explain
Mr (2:36:16 AM): well
Mr (2:36:19 AM): it won't necessarily dnet
Mr (2:36:20 AM): but it'll chip
Mr (2:36:30 AM): and
Mr (2:36:33 AM): if a big enough rock
Mr (2:36:37 AM): comes hurling at your cf hood
Mr (2:36:38 AM): fast enough
MrJ (2:36:41 AM): they'll be smalld ents
Chois i VTEC (2:36:43 AM): how will a carbon fiber hood chip?
Chois i VTEC (2:36:52 AM): and ******* rock comming at your hood will dent it
Mr (2:36:54 AM): uh..
Mr (2:36:58 AM): sigh
Mr (2:36:59 AM): nm
Mr (2:37:02 AM): get it
Chois i VTEC (2:37:06 AM): man stfu
Mr (2:37:10 AM): u stfu
Chois i VTEC (2:37:14 AM): u
Chois i VTEC (2:37:23 AM): im gonna post this on honda tech
Chois i VTEC (2:37:24 AM): HAHHAHA
Mr (2:37:29 AM): go for it..

I don't want to read all that but what do you mean by easily dentable? Fiber Images sat on their hoods at car shows showing people how strong they were.

sitting on a hood is different than having rocks crashing on your car @ high speeds

Carbon Fiber hoods don't dent at all. If anything upon a serious impact such as a car accident they can crack and splinter, but they don't dent.

Your friend made some valid points other than that though. Getting a C/F hood for speed when you have an otherwise stock car is pointless. The C/F is for lightweight and looks, but it's not going to make a noticable difference with an LX/DX automatic if that's what you drive.

hum, looking at CF hoods the other day, they do get small "dents" basically just teeny nicks from rocks hitting it. Just like the front bumer gets paint chips from rocks hitting it. But like the others said, it does appear to be very strong and still retain flexibility.

Rocks at high speeds are not dents.

They are chips.

The only "dents" I have seen/experienced are small imperfections in the top resin layer from rocks and stuff hitting the hood. Like others have just said.
Carbon composites are pretty strong and will hold their own until reaching its limits. Then it will splinter, shatter, break-up just like fiberglass will at lower stress levels.

oem Honda paint is just as weak to these rock chips....something to think about.

any hood will chip, as far as denting i've never seen a carbon fiber hood dent, but on the other hand your friend had a good point on saving up for a swap it seems like a good idea. if you buy up a b16a and freshen it up the b16a will be a sence a new car. alot fast and if you get a ledgit swap poss less milage

of course sitting on a hood won't necessarily dent it...

but carbon fiber hoods DO dent/chip when impacted hard enough..

when most of u are thinking of dents, you are prolly are thinking of the big nasty ones..

if a rock hits the cf hood hard enough, there will be a chip and possibly a small dent

imagine hurling debris @ 150 mph at your car... can u be 100% sure that there will be NO small dents..?

also, the stock hood also acts as a reinforcement for your car.. cf hoods are strong, but defeinetly not as strong as the stock one...

if you get in an accident, the cf hood will defientely nor protect your engine bay as well as stock

HAHAHAHA sounds like me and my friend arguing on IM all the time about car performance!! Well a CF hood has a clear coat on it and it can be chipped and dented but not the CF material itself nor will it dent beyond the clear coat. Don't worry about that if you want a cf hood get a cf hood.

Carbon Fiber is strong as fawk! I was in a accident with one on my old hatch and all that was damaged was the fiberglass support. My friend is rolling with it on his hatch now

My FI hood was only damaged on the ends where it mounts because it flew it up where i got hit head on, and the fiberglass bracing......mind my car was totalled and frame bent, but my carbon fiber was not even cracked...... to Fiber Images, they got me as a customer for life.

dude, u gotta ask urself, "do i drive thru freaken meteor showers daily?" wtf? 140mph rocks?

look at ur stock hood, it holds up fine to daily pebbles and ****. yea that would dent if a rock hit it, but a cf is like fiberglass but it wont crack under light loads. its stronger than the metal on our cars but its not like the metal. it can break on impact of an accident. my old cf hood was unlatched once and i was drving it to the body shop to get it aligned with the latch. anyway the rope that held it down broke and the hood hit my windshield, and complete smashed it as well as my roof. nothing happened to the hood, just my roof....pretty scary in a roll over if u ask me. but anyways, good quality cf hoods will NOT dent. u can stand on them and they will hold. trust me, i did it before...multiple times.

but aside from everything else, dont get the hood, u have a dx/lx its not worth it. the hood would be more than ur motors worth. save and get a motor.

if your car is going 90 mph, and you're behind a big rig whichs spews a rock at you, the impact on your car will be like a rock thrown at 90+ mph while your car is @ standstill. That is a valid point.

instead of STANDING on the hood, why don't you try jumping on it up and down?

if you lay a hammer on the hood, its not gonna dent. when the hammer is in motion and will impact the hood at a speed, tell me if u think its gonna dent.

an engine conversion would be a better investment than the hood imho

For some of you that dont know..."some" CF hoods are dentable.
i work at a performance store.... and some brands just suck.
ive seeen about 4-5 hoods wanting to be returned cuz after 1 month
theres lil dings all over the hood....
rock hitting on a hot day with hot engine = dings... cus the CF hood is not all 100% CF.
it usually has a fiberglass reinforcement that doesnt reinforce ****.

rocks that big arent gonna come flying down the highway. if its a big rock, most likely it will hit pavement first. unless the truck driver in front of u drops the rock out his window, then it will land on ur hood and maybe windshield. even so, a stock hood wouldnt do much protecting at that point. the point im trying to get across is that good quality cf hoods, are not poor replacements for stock OE hoods.

i assume all the cf hoods u've seen are crap. fiber images makes good ****, spoon makes good ****, kaminari makes good ****, etc.. maybe u saw one made by apc, first gen vis, timbuck tom, whatever.

as for jumping on the hood, do that to a stock hood, and it would dent, a cf may or may not crack. the fiberglass skeleton will crack although. there is a reason why race cars use cf over fiberglass/aluminum....not because its pretty either... oh btw: have u seen the testing done at fiber images? the jump on their hoods, drop a wheel/tire on the hood from six feet, and run the hood over. NO cracks NO dents and NO breakage.

This one lasted long enough.

Look if you're worried about damages to your C/F hood then you need to understand that anything that would damage a C/F hood would REALLY mess up your stock or especially fiberglass hood.

Lock.
