my car will crank fine and run for an hour then shuts off.......the clock and radio shuts off when it shuts down .....i cant get it to start until mabie 5 minutes later...
the main ground right behind the passenger headlight is kinda frayed....would this be a culprit? i just replaced the fuel pump to a switch, fuel filter, main relay, DISTRIBUTOR, checked all fuses, new plugs and wires, i did a compression test and it came out good. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!1

could be a ground but i doubt it must be a short somewhere, because you said it shut off with no power to clock or radio. I mean i had a ground cable i forgot to install when i did my clutch i had power everything execpt a check engine light and it wouldn't even crank. Try that ground you were talking about maybe that would work, it isn't gonna fix itself when no one chimes in

so you dont think its a ground. if it was a short....theres really no where to pinpoint the culprit.....damnit this sux ***, when my car would shut off...i could turn the key back then forward to "ON" and i wouldnt hear the fuel pump. well i rigged up the fuel pump to a toggle switch...well now when my car shuts off my fuel pump dosnt...so i know its not that. for some reason i think my cars going into CAUTION MODE and shutting down. like its heating up somewhere and causing a current shortage but my dash lights stay on...i do not understand

What model civic do you have? Could be the ignition switch. There's a recall on it. Over time and use, carbon builds up on the switch, causing your car to shutdown, esp after it has warmed up. I believe it's most civics from the 90s.

its a 92 civic hatchback....i dunno if its the ignition switch because when its about to shut off...my clock and radio dim in and out and finaly shuts off when the car does....keep in mind that my gauges dont dim or turn off at all..only my radio and clock....and when it does shut off...it take 5 minutes to "COOL" off and cranks right up no problems

I think its worth a try to see if you can get this replaced for free. Here was my experience with similar problem.

1. You drive for about 15min no prob
2. while driving the car shutsdown, no radio, console goes black, you scream oh ****!
3. You lose power steering(if you have it) and you cruise to the side wondering now what!
4. You look around and everything seems ok. You try to crank it, nothing.
5. after 5min or so of kicking, scream and scratching your head, you try again and it works, no problem. you drive home, and you sacrifice a goat to the god of your choice.
