Default Car sounds like a diesel

My problem is my car sounds like a diesel engine. I had a friend help me put a cam in and when it was started it was a diesel... he has tech knowledge with cars but has no idea. What is it? My first thought is something in the valvetrain or the timing belt. Any help would be great because driving a diesel Honda was not in my plans.

Ummmm yeah, do you know how diesel engines work? Detonation!! Not good at all, don't drive it until you figure this out!

Maybe your timing is very far off, causing either your valves to hit the pistons or causing detonation. Just a guess though, I've never seen this problem for myself.....

If you can't get it figured out put your stock cam back in to see if it still makes the noise.

If it comes to it I will, but I'm really not looking forward to it and want to avoid that as much as I can. My hopes are someone has come across this at some point...

I didn't mess with the valves at all, I was told I didn't have to. I guess I should open it up and adjust clearances?

My car sounded like that after a motor swap I did and it turned out that the friggin' timing was off by one tooth...
