can my o2 sensor be bad, with no cel?
symptoms: bad gas mileage, rough idle, and lots of black residue on my rear bumper.
before i rebuilt my engine, cylinder 3 was f*cked up and didnt burn the gas, all the gas just poured out of the exhaust (i got about 6mpg, thats how much it came out of the exhaust.), would all that gas break the o2 sensor? the thing is i do not have any cel's. also my idle is funky, if i leave it in "D4" at a stoplight idle drops to 2-300rpm, when its in "Nuetral" it goes to 800rpm" and i read this from prostreetonline.com
"Sensors should be tested every 3-4 months, In the interval periods, the following tips can show whether a sensor has reached the end of its service life:
Poor fuel economy
Higher exhaust emissions
Surging and/or hesitation
Rough idling
A ECU Error showing 02 sensor problems "
what do you guys think? im currently getting 20-25 mpg city 25-30 highway, with conservative driving.

when my O2 was going bad, i was running super lean and my a/f and egt gauges were showing it. when it ran lean, it would bog and the rpm would flutter back and forth. once i got a universal O2 plug, everything worked fine again. so yeah, your O2 can go bad without even throwing a cell.

my rpms go up and down slightly, but being lean would not explain the black smokey residue on my bumper... hmmm

Re: (jazz215)
You said this is in a z6, so Im thinking that your cat may be bad (definatley running at 6mpg is NOT good for it) because you don't have a second 02 to check the health of it. Take that bad boy off and check it. That could account for the extra black on the bumper and if it's clogged, that would account for the other symptoms as well.
