Can I remove the crank without removing the engine???
I have an EM1 and the keyway on my crank is ruined. Everytime I put a new key it just falls off because half the keyway on the crank is tapered. Anyways, I was talking to my "ASE Certified" uncle today and he says that it's possible to swap out cranks without removing the entire engine. He said all you had to remove was the tranny and oilpan. Has anyone ever tried this before???????

Well Ive seen or heard people dropping the pan and head and replacing pistons and rings. I assume you could do the same with the crank, prly easier to pull it unless you have a lift so you dont have to be on ur back for hours.

i can have the engine out of it and disassembled in about 2 hours. i think it would be easier to do it with it on a stand, i too am ASE Master certified, you can do it by taking out the tranny, but to me id have the engine out of it and on a stand but thats just me.

Well I dont have cherry picker or engine stand and would rather not mess with tearing the entire engine apart. I just wanna know if anyone has tried it before and if its possible.

it is possible and a lift can make it a lot easier. if you are doing it from under the car you would need another set of hands because the crank is pretty heavy and you dont want that to drop on you after you loosen the last bolt

it isnt just that. you dont want to nick any of the bearings when installing it either.

I've done it before. You'll have to remove the t-belt and oil pump housing also.

It would make it a little easier because you could stand up while doing it. More room for someone to help lifting the crank into place too. Doing it on jack stand shouldn't be a problem.

You may want to give this one shot before you go thru all the work of swapping cranks. http://www.miata.net/garage/hs....html

I've seen this work on many occasions.Follow the instructions and don't rush.Torquing the pulley right is what holds it on , not the key.The key is supposed to locate it only.Give it a try.

Yeh I have done it also, hell I replaced all my main bearings by keeping the crank in there
trust me, its a pain in the butt and I would much rather have the motor out... Like most of the above have said you will be spending your time either with yer neck crooked upwards or on yer back... it sucks.
