Icon2 Calling all civic owners that drive in snow/ice

I need help deciding which tires to buy for my 93 Civic SI. I have not had a chance to drive it in the snow.ice, but I need advice from those that do. I am not talking about a couple of inches here and there. The average snow fall here is around 120" between Dec and Apr. We usually have a 6" ice cap on all roads by the end of winter. The dont salt, only sand in this region. I hope this gives you guys enough information to help me make an informed decision on what tires to buy. I also plan on getting studded tires on the front at a minimum. Sorry for the lack of knowledge, but I usually drive my Dodge Mega Cab in the winter, but want to stop putting miles on my truck and would like to start using the Civic on days that it's not dumping.
Thanks again.
Tim

if you get studs on the front, you'll want them on the back too. only one end makes it drive really weird, been there done that. very unpredictable.

as to brand, i run a vredstein (sp?) snow trac II. it isn't available much in the states, only from independent dealers. got mine off craigslist, and they are pretty nice, but don't have much except a regular all season to compare to. i hear the blizzak is the best, but never run it so i can't say.

I forgot to mention that I will be running 185/60R14, I know that some manufacturers only make certain sizes.

i went last year in our snow storm on my falken ziex tires, 185 65 14s.
and the only time i went sideways was on purpose.
they did pretty damn good, was very suprised with them.

i drive my civic's all year. just put on a decent set of winter tires and your goldin, these cars are great in snow, they dont compare to a 4x4 truck, they tend to slide alot more because they are very light

and i would try and find a set or 185-65r14 thats the stock size and it will give you a bit more sidewall

I live in Calgary Alberta Canada, we get snow here Anyway, there are many god tires out there, my personal favorite over the years is a Toyo GO2 plus, they are priced well, and work amazing in snow and on ice!!

The Toyo KX is also very good, and fits performance sizes

Thanks guys, keep tire ideas/experiences coming. I want to stick with the 185/60R14, thats what the sticker, manual and Honda say is factory for both my SI's. Only one is going to be a winter driver.

damn do you look like a honda snow plow? haha i physically cant drive my car in the snow unless its less then an inch deep. i have brand new toyo proxes 4's which are amazing all weather tires, but turbo and snow dont mix unless your rolling it awd. i would recc. the toyo GO2+ as well. i work at a tire shop and they are by far a best seller and top performer in snow and ice.

Go out in a parking lot and cut donuts. Get used to how the car spins and practice stopping and taking off and pulling out of spins. The e-isn't just for stopping...

the blizzak's are wonderfull snow tires. I would run the factory size which most civic's are 185/65/14, for a snow tire you want a taller and narrower tire so it will cut deep down into the snow and not float up on top. The civic is actually amazing in the snow if you drive with some common sense and have good tires.

The Factory size for EG's is 185/60R14. Can you stud the Blizzacks? has anyone had experience with studding them? I want something that I can take in and have studded, if I decide that I am not getting enough traction. I have to climb a hill from 5700 to 5950 in less than 2 miles to get in my driveway and am going to need all the help I can get....

I run a good set of coopers with studs I like all 4 but u only really need the front 2. I have ran this set up for 4 years now I am a firefighter and do run calls with this car and had no problems at all making it to scene. I all so use oem size tires and rims for the winter.

****, we had so much snow last year my car was a plow at stock height!
dont drive like a idot, watch out for big hills and other drivers, in the snow and ice they are sometimes the biggest thing to worry about.

I usually have a second civic as a winter beater since winter is pretty bad here and there is salt everywhere.

Anyways, I have used a number of tires, so far I have really liked bridgestone blizzaks, and I currently have michelin x-ice. Don't know how those are yet tho. I don't really like studded tires tho, they are worth it when its really bad, but once the streets are plowed I hate them.

But just make sure to get skinny tall tires, they help the most in snow and ice. 185 would be the widest i'd go, even 175-70-14 would be good.

check out tirerack, I just looked for your size and they have 5 different snow tires but only two of them being studdable, firestone and pirelli which is a $25 a tire price difference, honestly I'd save the $100 and get the firestones. I'd try them without the studs first and see because you can always stud them if needed.

-seriously, I always love the canadian responses, they're all experts. lolz.

-the Hankook iPike or the Firestione Wintermeister in a 175/65/14. studded. end of.

-side note, the last response stated that you can stud a tyre after its been mounted and driven. you shouldn't, many of the pins will just pull out within 50 miles. you need to do this when the tyre is brand-new and un-used, the mounting holes get distorted from friction and heat. tire rack is kind of a rip off with shipping charges but the only online retailer of the firestones. hankook's available from discount tyre, free shipping. either can stud your new tyres at time of purchase, for a additional fee.

Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S (all season)

H rated (95mph?) directional yet still works in the rain and snow. I don't go crazy in the snow, I drive safe, but in the rain, I can drive like normal, rooster tail right out the back of my car blinding other drivers, its awesome.

I love them. check them out, do research, whatever you need, but I personally love them.
