well, first off i'd search under "smog" to pull up some good results about how to legally get a BAR sticker for your motor. It will save you a LOT of hassle. However, getting it will be a lot of hassle. Here's a link to get you started:

Spade is quite the knowledgable one in this subject also. You can PM him.

its a big problem depending on what area you are in. get all your papers together, and make sure that your motor is the same year or newer than the vehicle it is installed in. may have to put a stock cat, and exhaust manifold back on. go to any smog station and ask where the nearest smog ref is. if they dont know, at least ask for a #, they should at least have that. or you could just go to a gas station, ask for a smog check, and "accidently" leave a hundred dollars on the dash. pretty sure you will pass. after inspection by the smog ref, you wont get hassled by cops, and if you do, you will win in court because you will be legal.

bad idea....i tried keeping my car registered in NV, and the ONLY time ive been pulled over was because the cop had seen me in the area before. Needless to say he said hes seen me here for a few months, and if he saw me again without cali plates he would have the car impounded. Be safe and register it. Out of state plates do draw more attention. Try and make friends with Smog Shop owners.

here in cali we can get busted for smog equipment violations by a cop and be sent to a smog ref where as in other states there are no smog laws on swapped motors like here in cali, so its not all "hype" and us complaining its that we can get busted for anything that does not have a carb sticker on it.

but do register it here,

welcome

welcome to cali, shorty. to answer your question, ok first, if you plan to live in ca for years, then yes, you would have to register your car, along with your id, and driver license as well. here, you have to smog your car every year and in order to pass smog, make sure those mods come with carb stikers on them. motor has to be hook up right, no check engine light, no wires cut, and no loud exhaust. good luck and becareful, there are tons of street racers here.

what part of cali are you moving too? i live in norcal(bayarea). the cops in the southbay are really dicks..... i've never been pulled over and got my hood popped but i've seen plenty as im driving in traffic CHP has some car on the shoulder lanes hood wide open...

half of the time its no big deal, my buddy has a lsvtec and bolt ons... when the cops asked him to pop his hood, cop looked at it and said thats it?(talking about the intake) wrote him a fix it for the intake. my buddy was in awe and said "you sure?" then shut the hood and took the ticket....

i wouldnt worrry that much if i were you.. its just when you register your car in cali you gonna have to do a smog test...

good luck on that one

Hell yeah recon sucks...i had to deal with that sh*t when i lived in oahu, for some reason the other islands dont have it. i also found out that the county that i live in now here in oregon don't do smog test so now i dont have to worry about anything . when i lived in a different county i failed the smog test about 8 times but now i got my car registered since i don't have to do it and so the cops cant f*ck with me.

That's not how it is in San Diego. They will pull ANY import over for ANYTHING.

Yeah, the best was when I got a ticket for having "over $500 in modifications, and not reporting it to the DMV." I laughed about that one, went to the judge and said I'd never heard of such a thing. The judge looked up the violation number and it came up "no proof of registration." The judge started busting up, told me there's no such thing, and have a good day. Ahhhh, I love SDPD

actually, there is a law about that. my friends dad is CHP and he told me about a law that requires the owner of a vehicle to report any added modification to the DMV, not for smog purposes, but because in california, they adjust your registration fees to the value of your car, so if you got some stunna 24"s on there, you gotta pay more. he told me that he never busted anyone for this crap, but it is there none the less, just hope the piggies dont notice it.
