Default brakes making sound...

I drive a 99 civic EX, and i had some brake pads (not sure which brand, may be hawk) and rotor (power slot) for like half a yr, it's starting to make noise when i step on the brake (sounds like the brake pad is gone), so i lifted up the car, but the strange thing is that, looking between the caliper and rotor, i see alot of meat left, the pads were like a lil less than an inch wide, so it looked like the pad was still good... and the mechanic said that the pad looks like brand new to him...

i tried brake cleaner, but no use...

any clues?? are my pads gone?? or how can i eliminate the squaking sound..

If i have to change my pads, is there any link that u guys can provide me for step by step instructions? I wanted to do it myself...

btw, i did a search alreay, but no write up on DIY changing brake pads...

Thank honda tech members before hand, ur response will be greatly appreciated!

did you check both of the brake pads (inner&outer)? if your calipers are sticking at all, the outer ones will look like new but the inner pads will be worn out. Take your calipers off and have a good look at the pads, also be sure to clean and regrease with proper grease the caliper slider bolts.

but what did it mean by caliper are sticking at all?

and shouldnt both the inner and outer ware evenly? are my brakes not set up right?

it means that if your caliper isn't sliding freely on the slider bolts it's gonna cause the caliper to squeeze more on one pad than the other wearing it out faster.

Usually on a noise issue check the rotor, does the edge have a lip on it? also is the surface good? get a ball point pen and try to mark a straight line from center to outside and see if you get alot of indents. This means that when the pads contact the rotor its making channels / grooves that make noise. Usually this can be cured by turning the rotor or removing the outer lip (most common)
