I've noticed that just below my brake master cylinder, the black paint on the brake booster is all stripped away and the paint that is left in that area is all bubbly and stuff. I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a seal or something that is known for giving out and causing this leak. Or is it that my brake master cylinder is just going bad? Any ideas? Here's some pics below. (Sorry for the blurry pics!)



Notice how on this second pic here that you can see that brake fluid has apparently leaked out from just around the cylinder itself.

what you got there is a leak from the master cylinder get a new one. your booster might went south too....

I know that Im dragging this up but I got the same leak. I know there is a rod seal in there and I guess that Im gonna replace that pretty soon. I noticed not to long ago that my car was doing the same thing the paint was all bubbly in that area but I never notice any brake fluid loss in the reservoir.

What was done on your car xavior66 to fix this problem?

It is normal for a mastery cylinder to leak a little, if its leaking like crazy then replace it. But it is normal for them to leak a tad every now and then.

I don't know about that. You can see the monster buildup of dirt around it from the dusty Texas roads. Not a single drop of any fluid under my hood.

Yeah some don't leak at all. Some do though, some leak a very very tiny bit, that the only way you can really tell that it is leaking, is if you take the master cylinder off and you will see the paint behind it missing.

So would you even be concerned with it if you saw the paint bubbling up? I dont ever really see any fluid missing out of my reservior.

ya i had this leak before too. its a leak from the master cylinder like you said. i bought a used mc on h-t for i cant remember how much. i swapped it and no more leaks, well, a little leak, but i havent figured out where it is yet.

make sure to get a flare wrench. those lines will be stuck on there tight. even better would be to just straight up use vice grips. the flare wrench didnt even work on my lines. good luck

So did you install a new shaft seal or whatever its called when you put in the new MC?

When you got the new MC you really should have replaced the seal. Sounds like you didn't.

I dont know what you are talking about because I havent replaced anything yet. I was just asking that guy if he changed out that seal.

I just pulled the master cylinder off the brake booster and looked at that shaft seal. I actually took it off and cleaned everything up with some carb cleaner got all the bubbled up paint off everything and reinstalled everything and took it for a drive. It had not leaked any when I got back to my house and my brakes worked fine. So I dont know right off hand if like stated before a small leak is within limits on the master cylinder.

Now that your brakes are working fine I'd just keep an eye to see if it starts leaking again. If it starts leaking again within a month or so, I'd get a new seal or new MC from me. I'm in VA too.

If it was small then no I would not worry about it. If its dripping wet and you see a puddle and your loosing fluid, then I would worry.

Well like I said it must be a small leak because I cant remember the last time that I had to fill up my brake fluid reservior with some fluid. The only thing is just the black paint that bubbled up all around the MC. It has to be a small leak so I wont worry about it to much then.
