bolts keep snapin!!
hey h-t
i have a gsr which i am tryin to change the head gasket i put everything together and i put all the caps on and i try 2 torque my bolts to 20 lbs like it says everytime i torque them to spec i snap the bolts i was wondering if 20 lbs is the correct torque spec for the 12mm bolts and why do they keep snapping the caps do not go on flush is that normal?

Straight up I did the same thing before. If you're using a standard torque wrench that starts at 20 or 25 ft-lbs, you're not doing anything wrong. Most don't even "click" when it reaches the set torque level because it's so low. In fact on one of my motors that required the same torque spec for a similar bolt it didn't click but I could FEEL it hitting that "specific point" where it would click but because it was so low it didn't really make a sound. I repaired the snapped bolt and did the rest hand tight. If you have the funds, invest in a lower range torque wrench.

20 lbs is nothing I don't think your torque wrench is giving you a good reading. It should be just a gently pull with a regular wrench and not more. Try a better torque wrench.

Re: bolts keep snapin!!
I snapped one of mine. Flipped out
Snugg them down in sequence. go over them gently again. always re start the ratchet before its about to click so you have 1 small turn. Do not over max the wrench. turn half way stop, reset turn a little bit more and liste carefully. I never did it before and the first time i did it i snapped the son of a bitch. i went and got a smaller 3/8 wrench did some conversions used it a few times on other hardware and **** like i tested it on the wheel bolts on my lawn tractor Just to hear the click. So i knew what to listen for. Have to tighten them down equal. I already did the engine 2 times over. in the past week. Thought everything WAS good and i took everything back apart, check out my Timing Belt issue in the tech forum. Started off with a cam seal, a timing belt and it snowballed from there. Good luck Take your time

your tq wrench must not be calibrated. And which bolts are you snapping? there are alot of bolts in the head. Some for the valvetrain assembly, then some for the valve cover, and some that hold the head down, as well as other ones.

Re: bolts keep snapin!!
i dont torque those bolts for that reason ... from my experience best best is to hold the head of the ratchet instead of the bar ... tighten it as much as you can from the head of it instead of the bar.. never had any problems yet doing it that way. another thing is that when u are taking it apart make sure it is 100% cold and not even a little warm .. when u take it out when it is warm the bolts are still expanded causing bolts to snap left and right trust me ive had plenty of experience with that too haha

Re: bolts keep snapin!!
The torque spec is correct (20ft/lbs) and it is a critical bolt, I wouldn't just "wing it" There is an issue with some of the new OEM bolts that Honda is supplying, they are of the wrong grade, (OEM was a black hardened bolt, new bolts are chromated yellow)
Go to the hardware store and get some of the highest grade fasteners you can get and you will be able to torque them correctly.
