blox or skunk 2 top end opinions
hi guys
i wanna make some power so im looking around and i know this had to have been discussed at one point but i cant find anything.
right now i have a stock jdmb16a in my 99 coupe
heres what i plan on doing:
valve train (whats the best springs and retainers for the money)
cams (again the best for the money)
cam gears
intake manifold
ill have the head cleaned and ported i know a good machine shop
are the skunk 2 and blox even a good option? i've seen some discussion on ITR stuff what do you think?
im sure someone has done this at some point
any help will be appreciated
thanks

Re: blox or skunk 2 top end opinions
Blox and skunk2 parts are not on the same level in terms of quality. Blox stuff is good for what it is but they really are the budget parts manufacturer...
I personally have the complete skunk2 valvetrain and skunk2 stage 1 cams. I am very happy with the setup. It makes noticeable power and is very streetable... What kind of power numbers are you looking for here?
All of this stuff will require a tune though. If you just slap all of those parts on your car will run like garbage until you get it tuned. Plan that into your budget.
ITR cams will net you some gains without a tune but with a tune you will see better gains with the skunk2 cams...
The ITR manifold and the skunk2 manifold are similar set ups...

skunk2 is a good manifold choice but look into higher end valvetrain components. ive heard from alot of people that skunk2 valvetrain components are not as good as other similar price brands.

Re: blox or skunk 2 top end opinions
thanks guys
im not looking to get 300 horse or anything
i just want a little more power for the top end and i just want to do it right
since i know people have already done it, im just asking opinions
after i build the topend i plan on throwing a 1.8 block under it and calling it a day
and tuned are you talking dyno tuned? or street tuned? i understand with a dyno tune you'll get much more power but is it safe to run on a street tune?
thanks

Re: blox or skunk 2 top end opinions
I ran on the stock tune for a little while. It is completely safe but you wont see any power increase. For all of the money you are about to spend we are talking <5hp without a tune. The car will idle a little funny and spew black soot everywhere...
Street tunes are iffy. In this case with cams you really need to know A/F ratios to see what needs to be changed...
BTW there is more to it than just throwing a b18 block under it and calling it a day, but that is an entirely different subject...

1. Ferrera (sp?) or Supertech
2. Skunk2 Pro1's, Blox B or even ITR/CTR cams since you're still on the stock bottom end
3. Cam gears are all about the same...
4. Edelbrock Victor X
You may also want to check in the All Motor forum to see what the popular choice are these days...

Probably so, but they're the only Skunk 2 cams i would want to use. For this setup, a set of Blox B's / ITR cams would probably be fine; however, if you're upgrading the valvetrain, why not go a little larger than the norm...Honestly, i know very little of NA setups these days...i'm too in to turbo setups

Re: blox or skunk 2 top end opinions
You can run the skunk2 tuner cams on the stock valvetrain but I upgraded mine.
I have no personal experience with Blox cams but in this game you get what you pay for. I have never had a problem with a skunk2 product.
ITR cams are nice but you will see better gains with the Tuner skunk2 stage 1 cams...
Skunk2 tuner stage 1 cams are designed for maximum gains with the stock compression...
For the OP I think anything more extreme than the tuner skunk2 stage 1 cams would be pointless and poop on driveability...

LS/Vtec and B20/Vtec setups are different animals entirely. I'm sure you can attest as to all that goes into building one properly...
