Default Re: basic header question

4-4, bwah ha ha.

4-2-1 makes more low end power, 4-1 is better for high end power. I know there's more theory behind why each does what it does, but that's all I've gathered so far. I think it has to do with scavenging and how the engine breathes through the RPMs. If you're looking for a new header, there's more to look for besides pipe configuration, such as the angles of the bends, diameters, construction (mild steel vs. T304 or T409 stainless, the latter is better), weld quality (TIG vs MIG), coatings. I would suggest asking people with similar setups what they like and looking at some quality headers like the new Skunk2 Megapower header or whatever they call it as well as the Hytech headers, the ITR header and dragracing headers. Look at the designs and see what makes a good header.

On my 94 LX (D15B7) I had the original 4-1 log manifold and switched to the EX 4-2-1 tri-y style manifold and noticed an increase in my low and mid range power, however this is not exactly a fair comparison because the D15B7s 4-1 style log manifold combines the exhaust about 8-12 inches after the exhaust ports and most 4-1 style headers combine the exhaust gases something like 4-12 inches before the catalytic converter.
On my 93 CX with a B18C1 I have a Tri-Y style header, I think like a DC or something and the low end is nice, I have torque, but the high end seems kinda pathetic even with VTEC activating. However, the bottom section of the two piece header is banged up.
