I have a 92 civic dx automatic. Every once in awhile the car will just click, when trying to start, Then it'll start randomly. It usually helps if I mess with the wires connected to the battery, make sure they're tight and jiggle them around. I thought it might be the wire from the battery, and am hoping it's not the starter going bad I hear they're a pain to replace.

It hasn't happened for a few weeks and just happened this morning, took me about ten minutes to start it up. Thanks for any help.

I had the same problem before, it was my ground. Just check all your grounds and make sure it's tight. If it is your starter then it woudn't be hard to change, there only 2 bolts holding it and 2 wires connected and make sure you disconnect the neg. battery before messing with it. GL

A starter is prety easy to replace, you would be surprised i bet.

Sounds like its a wiring thing, and not the starter itself Though.

Are your battery cables in good condition? Are the battery terminals clean? Check that the ground and power to the starter are connected well and not broken anywhere.

You may want to take the wires off and clean them up and spray some sealer or whatever that stuff is that goes on battery terminals to protect them from oxidizing on you again.

Bingo, terminals and other electrical conections corrode of time. CLean them and it will help.

But like every one said, for the love of god, please disconnect the negative terminal first.

alright having exact same problem. cleaned all grounding terminals. I can hear a click every time so I know that the selinoid is getting signal but, not sure what else to check if it works intermitatley. but it almost always starts if its only been off for a few minutes to an hour. its weird. could it be the starter?also it just started after a tranny swap. the reason I think its not the battery is because after a try or 10 it will start the car, usually with no trouble. but I will get the batter tested.

I would clean the wires first then check for continuity, if its bad then its your wire. It may not even be your starter and just your battery not having enough amps to start.

Starters are not hard to change, its just 2 bolts, 1 nut on the starter and disconnecting your battery.

already cleaned the terminals. both the battery ground and the tranny ground. any other ideas?

Bump cause I'm having the same problem. Starter is good. I had it bench tested @ autozone. Battery is good as well. When trying to start, it clicks every time so solenoid is good. As what reed857 says, hard to start but once started, no problems afterwards.

damn i'm having the same problem the same exact one lets hope i can solve it here before i buya new starter and find out it's not hte problem. bump this up!

for an intermittent problem like that the only thing i can think of to do is the next time it clicks but doesnt start, give a few taps on the starter solenoid with a long screwdriver or prybar and a hammer, if it start up the next try then your starter solenoid is weak.. buy a new starter

man don't bother cleaning your 14 year old ground wires. I tried that, in my 94 civic, and it didn't work. my crap kept clicking without starting every once in a while.

I ended up going to circuit city (cuz somebady gave me a gift card there) and bought 20 feet of 4 gauge wire ( I didn't need that much, the rest will be used for an amp) and then replaced all the grounds and the starter wire. now the car starts perfect every time.

I took apart the old wires that I had in there and they were corroding INSIDE of the wire so cleaning the ends would not have fixed anything.

also my personal rule is to try the cheapest thing first haha, cuz usually the cheap things need to be changed anyways and it saves big time if the expensive things are not bad.
