crazy starter/ground wiring problem
I started with a CRX running an OBD1 d16y8 swap. The motor was toast, so I dropped a z6 in. Now it won't start!
At first, when I went to start it I got a click. I tried jump-starting it but nothing happened. Then I took a look at the starter wiring and realized that it was probably backwards. I put the positive lead on the left post of the starter, and the negative on the right post. After doing this, when I tried to hook up the battery, I got an arc and the starter tried to spin.
So, right now, I can't hook my battery up because it makes my starter turn over. To try to fix this problem, I unhooked the ignition wire (no change), the ground (no change). The only thing that kept the starter from spinning when I hooked the battery up was when I unhooked the positive wire from the starter.
Two problems which may be related are: The negative terminal on the starter is connected directly to the negative terminal on the battery. I know this isn't stock, but I'm pretty sure that's how it was with the old motor, and it started. Also, there's a small-ish ground connector on the back of the wiring harness that I couldn't find a spot to connect to the motor. Could these have anything to do with my crazy starter?
CLIFFS: When I hook up my battery, the starter spins. If the positive lead on the starter is unhooked, it doesn't spin. if ONLY the positive starter lead is hooked up, I can hook up the battery and it STILL spins.I don't know how this is possible, so whats the deal?

Re: crazy starter/ground wiring problem (Maireeka)
Does anyone have ANY idea? I'm completely lost on this, and this car needs to run.
Where is the negative post on the starter SUPPOSED to go?

i just did an obdII gsr swap in my crx and i had a similar problem...what i did was this...
ran a ground wire from the starter mounting bolt to the body
ran a ground wire from the clutch cable bracket to the body
replaced my battery ground (only because the terminal broke in half)
after all this, my car starts and runs like normal, aside from the fact i dont have vtec because i need some wiring work done

From what I understand the positive goes on one post, but the other post is not a ground it should be a black/white wire that goes to the ignition switch. The starter grounds through the mounting bolts.

you are thinking about this backwards.
the starter has a constant 12v+ when the key is in the on position, the GROUND is switched. so if you have a constant ground, as soon as the key comes on its going to engage the starter.
hope that helps, if not PM me.

Re: (schardbody)
I know for certain that I currently have no grounds on the transmission. I'm going to remedy this today.
Schardbody, if the ground is supplied through the ignition terminal, then how come the starter still runs when I have it unhooked? The starter will turn with only the positive hooked up and all others disconnected.

if thats the case then your solenoid is hanging up and you need a new starter.

Re: (Maireeka)
Just to check, which post is positive and which is negative on the starter?
MOTOR
BACK OF CAR: + ign - :FRONT OF CAR
BATTERY
that's how I've got it hooked up now. When I reverse the - and +, all I get is a click when I try to start, nothing else happens.

Re: (Maireeka)
the thick wire going to your starter is always 12 volts the thin wire going to your starter is just a 12 Volt signal wire. There is no ground wire on the starter, it grounds through the motor. take your starter out and go to a parts store, they can test it there to make sure it still works and then try again.

Re: (teler86)
OK! So the problem MAY be the fact that I'm running 3 wires to the starter?! I'll go out and check, maybe she'll finally start!
