Axle replacement
I've got a weird vibration or kind of shimmy, like whip, whip and I can feel the wheel jerking at low speed, especially when coasting. I remember this was an early sign of axle failure. questions:
I can't tell by driving tight circles which side it is. Any other ideas on how to Isolate it before it gets so bad it makes that chugga chugga noise?
1. What if that little clip ring breaks off in the tranny? any special technique to prevent this?
2. Do I really need to drain the tranny? It doesn't seem like much, if any, oil will come out of the axle hole.
3. Torque on axle nut. 134 ft lbs? Oil on the surface or no?

There is a post here where one user is very adamant that you can jack one side up (WAY up) to prevent the fluid from spilling out. This may have some merit, but I would do this at my own peril. Why not just change the fluid at the same time.
