auto to manual
has anyone converted a JDM Auto Ecu to Manual? I can't find RP18 anywhere on the circuit board. I measured R18 and it's 2.76k ohms, not 2.4k ohms. What am I doing wrong here. I searched and found nothing. tried Pgmfi and Hondata website. Nothing.....I have chipped P28, but not the P30 JDM one...

I've done it several times.
simply follow the directions...

measuring the resistor in the circuit is pointless since there are a lot of other things you are connecting to in the ECU.
I've seen 4.7k ohms in there as well. Drop in a 1.4K and you'll be fine.

does the 1.4k resistor have to be surface mount or can it be anything from radio shack...sorry for asking dumb *** questions? i just want to do it once and do it right the first time. this surface mount resistor is really making my brain spin. or finding one is even harder.

In a pinch I've used regular radioshack thru-hole parts on P30s. It's not perfect or nice looking, but as long as you don't short anything out, it will work fine. I'd recommend glueing the resistor to the board though, the soldering points are not made to hold the vibrational weight of the larger parts.
It's not really doing it right, but again it will work fine. To do it right you'd need to place an order for the correct resistor from Digikey.com and solder the correct part in there. But since they have a minimum order and the resistor will cost you a few cents, plus shipping... it would be a $15 resistor which is nuts.

now, this is making more sense. someone who actually read the thread. I have looked at Digikey.com Your right, i don't mind paying 15.00 for a surface mount resistor. the only info i don't know is the value of the resistor. e..gg 1/4 watt or 1/8 watt. on top of the resistor is a number (472). does that mean anything or referring to a part number.

surface mount resistors don't really use wattage ratings. they are based on their physical size. 1208 (12mmX8mm) 1006, 0805, 0604, 0402 I think. It's been a while since I havn't simply called them by the first number.
as far as mounting a through hole part, the smaller the better. there is no power through that resistor so if you can locate a 1/8 watt that would be better than a 1/4 watt.
top of the resostor... 472 reads the same way that the stripes do on a surface mount resistor only you don't have to know the colors.
4=first digit
7=second digit
2=multiplier.
ie 472 is a 4700 ohm resistor.
at least that how it's supposed to be, there are a lot of resistors that do not follow this rule.
