Air Conditioning service, R12 vs. R134 retrofit, etc. HELP?? :)
Tomorrow I bring my car in for A/C service.. I have priced both R12, and R134 conversion... R12 seems to be a BIT cheaper option, but I'm concerned about if I have to add more later, I may get into trouble, and/or have to pay alot of $$ for it again..
R12 is about $80 a shot... and the R134 conversion runs about $140..
I have been told by one dealer that R134 in older hondas does not get near as cold as R12, just because of the system being designed for R12...
Can anyone shed some light, give me opinions etc.
This is on a 93 si hatch, and I DOOOO plan on keeping it MANY years... Thank you!

R12 isn't made anymore because its harmful to the environment, so if your system leaks then you will pay out the *** for a recharge, and while R134a may be more expensive right now becuase of the retrofit, a refill will be much less.

true r12 is colder then r134. i just bought a conversion from the parts store and it ran me $7 bucks. i have a 93 hb and just converted to 134. imo it still blows cold around noon time with the sun shining outside and i live in New Orleans. just make sure it vacuum it out and replace the O-rings. Our cars are old and since you have no freon you minus well change all the O-rings.
edit: $140 for the conversion? go to the parts store and they have the conversion with the gauge kit that you can pump yourself at home. i paid $7 for the nozzle the you screw on top of you A/C line. $22 for the gauge. $4 each r134 can which i only needed 2. hope this helps.

they both are freon. i doubt it noticeable. as for the longer life span, depends on your blower, leaks, evaporator valve?, compressor, condensor. it all can go out at anytime who know.

there is a little bit of a difference in temp but i would reccomend that you retrofit because you have been lucky that you have gone ten years with out have to recharge your system. it is not hrd for a stone to put a hole in your condensor.

I'm a certified air conditioning technician in all 50 of the United States. Here's my opinion:
R12 blows noticably colder in systems designed for it. It's more expensive than R134 (1,1,1,2-tetraflouroethane) because the only supply of it is what vendors haven't yet sold. If you can afford to get R12, assuming your system doesn't leak, get R12.
R134 does a great job in systems designed around its volumetric/pressure efficiency. It doesn't do as well in R12 systems, but if your system is perfectly air-tight and the technician who does your charge doesn't suck, you may not notice a difference.
The R134 conversion kit costs like $25 at Napa and you can do it yourself. Anyone who tells you that it's $150 is retarded...and if you pay $150 to have it done, you're retarded as well
