Default A/C Question.

Hopefully some of you guys know a bit about Air Conditioning.. coz i dont know much.
I have a 91 integra, i'm fairly certain that is the R12 System... which is about 80 bucks a pound..

My A/C will work when i first turn it on, its not incredibly cold, but its cool, then after blowing for a bit it turns into just plain air.. I'm pretty sure i just need more Freeon, being such an old car, i assume the freeon slowly leaked out somewhere, but the cool air when i first turn it on is a sign that theres still a bit in there, so i assume its not a huge leak, So do you think i could just get some free on put in?

Also, what does it take to convert to the R-134A system, is it a hard conversion, and about how much will it cost?

you can't just get r12 freon. you have to have some kind of EPA license to handle it. if you want to convert your car to r134 you have to first get the remaining r12 taken out by a shop, then there are these metal adapters that go on the low and high pressure lines, and you fill it up with r134. there are kits you can buy at all auto parts store and online.

ive been havin a hard as time with mine 2 i have the same year. Ya it more than likely has a small leak somewhere and you can keep puttin freon in it but it will keep leakin out. In my case it stayed cold for about a week. then just blew warm air. I also converted to R134. I just went to autozone and they gave me this 60 dollar conversion kit. It is like a a nozzle that you screw on to the existing one under your hood. an air hose and 3 cans on R134. but you CANNOT blend them so you have to take it somewhere and have it flushed out. dont just release it cause R12 is extremely poisonous and damages the ozone immensly (not to be a science nerd) but thats why they quit makin it. I have also heard that because R134 has alot more compression than R12 that it could blow out gaskets on the condensor but i never had a problem with it. thats just what i heard but its not hard, and the instrutions are really easy to follow
anyone got anything else?

How much did this kit cost?

My dad was telling me it's like 500 bucks to get it converted...

And i'd still have the problem of a potential leak right?

i converted one of my cars one time from r12 to r134. first you have to evacuate the r12 then flush out condenser, evaporator, and all the lines. you also have to dump out the compressor oil and install new oil. but the thing is is the system was designed for r12 not r134 and wont blow as cold. in my opinion its not worth it you can the auto part store and get some r12 additive for cheap. make sure you get some with some dye in it so detect your leak. i hope my 2cents help good luck
