AEM Short Ram

I like the AEM short ram, but like everyone says there are minute differences but for the most part an intake is an intake, look around though i got mine from the tire rack for 75 on a sale, as for the ebay+KN it works, i'm just not personally a big fan of cotton mesh/ oil screen filters *edit* there isnt anything really wrong with the ebay+ K&N, had one in my jetta, but I like the fitment and the way the AEM look sunder the hood, that's really the only difference

A short ram doesn't start producing power until too high in the powerband. A CAI is better choice for a daily driven y7 (assuming you aren't worried about water). If you are worried, then just get a drop-in K&N filter.
I've been running a CAI (that I purchased for about the same price as a short ram) for almost 2 years now. I've driven it during heavy downpours, and I've never had any issues. It takes a lot of standing water and a heavy foot to hydrolock an engine.

in my case with my first motor (z6) that was not the case
my wife drove past me (Nissan Maxima) hitting a puddle in the road that threw water into my lane. only doing 40-45mph
just bad luck i guess

It's a simple concept. A longer pipe produces more power below peak torque and a shorter pipe produces more power above peak torque.
You can look at Mista Bone's eBay short ram vs. AEM CAI dyno plot if you want dyno testing results.

Yes. Like I said, I've been risking it for almost 2 years, and I drive the car in the rain. If your car isn't lowered (much), you keep the fender liner in place, and you don't open the throttle when you drive through puddles, the risk is small.
If you're not comfortable with the risk, that's your choice, and there's nothing wrong with it.

I drive a '99 LX D16Y7. Personally, I like the intake/exhaust setup of this motor for efficiency and reliability. Getting close to 40mpg on road trips in a 9 year old car is pretty satisfying.
I recently purchased and installed a new AEM SRI and haven't had any regrets. Before the install, I was running a drop-in K&N with the resonator capped off- this gave better throttle response and a nice sound at WOT.
When I installed the SRI and reset the ECM I noticed an improvement in throttle response over the K&N/stock box combo. As far as horsepower goes, it's probably not measureable. Also, I believe replacing the AEM dryflow filter with a K&N or similar filter would net additional gains.
The stock intake tube on a Y7 is about 2" where the AEM tube is 2.5". Some folks don't like the way it looks when installed on the Y7 manifold, but I think it looks, and flows, better than stock. Another option that would probably see better gains is a Y8 intake manifold from an automatic (search) using the stock Y8 box and tubing with a K&N.
I bought my AEM system from jhpusa.com for $115.xx shipped. It came with all the necessary hardware and fit pretty well when installed. An ebay intake might have fitment issues- afterall, it is ebay. I opted for AEM knowing it is designed for my car and warrantied as well.
I say go for it and let us know what you think!
