Default Advice on using a digital timing light / ignition timing

Sorry for the dumb question guys. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around from what I’ve read about in other posts, but I still don’t quite get it. If I’m setting ignition timing on my car, would I leave the advance on 0 degrees then use the mark in between the three on my crank pulley? Or would I set it to 16 degrees then use that middle mark? That is the part that’s confusing me. I read in one post that with digital timing lights you would have the option of setting it to 16 degrees then use the white TDC mark instead. Any advice appreciated.

Check this out, pretty decent DIY for setting timing.

This is why I use a regular timing light...

Ya know, I had considered buying one of the fancy digital lights. But all I read is that they do nothing but complicate a rather simple job...

Usually come with instructions, not sure how its confusing. I just stick to what still works and how to check ignition timing.

I appreciate it, but I’m familiar with the process itself, just not with using my timing light. That’s where I’m getting confused

You are correct. It does come with instructions, but I was still having difficulty understanding.

set it to 0 on the gun. I have an adjustable one as well and this fucked me up....I couldn't see the notch on the car at all and if that was true my valves should have been bent.....my gun wasn't set to 0 offset. Set to 0

A static timing light (no advance **** or +/- buttons) will light up when the spark plug fires... so if you are on the 1st (cylinder #1) plug wire, and the distributor is properly set, this should happen when the crank pulley is at the 16' RED mark, which is between the two marks at +/- 2' (that's 14 and 18 degrees) and about an inch to the left of the WHITE single mark all alone... which is true TDC. You would move the distributor so that the pointer and the RED mark align when the light blinks. When you use a timing light with adjustable advance, you can either leave it set to zero and use the technique stated previously OR adjust the ****/buttons to 16' and move the distributor until you light up TDC, which is the white mark... or missing paint mark all by itself about an inch to the right of the three marks clustered together.
