Default Advance timing

I don't really get on how to this work. There is red, green, and the top white mark. If you want to get more power out of it. Do you push ur disturbutor toward the firewall or out toward you when you are timing it. Because rite now my timing is below the red mark because i have push it in toward the firewall. Is that the right way to do it?

Go buy a Helms manual before you do anything else to your car.

I don't think you get more power, I think it just speeds up the combustion cycle of your motor. Making acceleration faster, but you burn gas faster. Something like that... somebody correct me if i'm wrong.

I think you get top end and lose bottom end. But remember cars are timed for a reason.

Advanced timing=more low end
Retarded timing=more top end

The proper way to adjust timing should be with a timing gun. And don't forget to let your car warm up to normal operating temp.

By advancing timing you do gain power up to a certain point. Then it really has no effect. For example this was tested on a standard B-Series engine. Factory specs are 16 degrees +/- 2 degrees. The engine was tested at 18/19 degrees and gained rougly 1-3whp across the entire rev range. It was tested up to around the 22-24 degree mark as well. Same results. So they continued advancing but gained nothing. Now of course there could be differences with cam timing, added fuel etc... For example ER ECU's run rediculous amounts of advanced timing.

I would just stick to the service limits. Make sure you warm the car up, turn off ALL accessories, jump the SVC connector (yes this is very important), and make sure your idle is steady and to factory specs. Get your timing gun, hook to #1 cylinder and set to what you want. Middle mark is 16, one is 14 and one is 18. Have fun.

Advancing increases low end power...1000-4500 RPMS. Retarding is more for top end 4500 and up

i know there has been several posts about this do a search
i saw a graph that said once you advance your timing past 18/19 degrees in is no longer beneficial. 17-18 is about normal for an "advance
also according to the graph posted power is gained over the entire band not just "low or high" end

no ur right advancing timing fires before the cylinder reaches the top of its stroke.

you need to slow your role man! I've been reading a few of your posts and from what I've gathered your pretty new to this, right? No offense, but you asked what low end power meant All I have to say is instead of making all this stupid post here on the "Tech", you need to slow down and research all this **** and take in as much useful info as possible. This is a great site and everyone on here has learned something by SEARCHING, and that should be your goal for the next few weeks. If you feel you have some helpful advise or have a question that hasn't been asked a million times, then post a new thread.

If you keep going the way you are now, this will be you next post...
WTB new motor for my car because I advanced the timing and reved the **** out of it to 10k
